there are pluses and minuses on both sides of the "sid on the pk" issue. my feeling is that he's only going to get so many minutes a night, and a minute he spends in a primarily defensive role killing penalties is a minute he's not out there at even strength or on the pp in better percentage offensive situations.

Late to the party, here's my team:

Kunitz - Crosby - Bennett
Neal - Malkin - Stalberg (Can he play the right?)
MacArthur - Sutter - Cooke
Adams, Glass, Vitale, Whatever

Orpik - Martin
Letang - Niskanen

Doesn't Stalberg play the left? Wouldn't it make more sense to go Stalberg - Malkin - Neal so everyone is at their preferred position? I have virtually no plans to ever buy a jersey again, but the prospect of MacArthur being a Penguin makes me change my mind. If he were signed to any more than a 1 year deal, i'd get his jersey. mmmmm MacArthur.

MacArthur is precisely the player we can't sign for a few years once the Letang deal is settled.

+MacArthur $4m
+Stalberg $2.5
+Cooke $2m

Dropping Jokinen saves $2m, but even still, not enough cap space for those signings. And those contracts are on the low end.

I had wanted Stalberg too. He's big, fast, can score, and play either wing... but after reading up about him pouting during the recent cup run, I'm not so sure.

Still, we really need a couple wingers in the $2-3m range who can play in the middle 6. And anyone at that salary is going to be flawed.

Jesse. Thank you so much for posting in the You're the GM 2013-14 thread. Your post means a lot to not just myself, but everyone here. I'd like to ask you a few questions:

-Aren't you concerned about Matt Niskanen in the top 4? As a plug-in he can be fine for a game, however I just don't think he's a top 4 consistent talent. Seems to always falter whenever giving consistent minutes. Same story in Dallas.
-Whatever for the forwards can be Jeffrey, for now at least
-Do you not want to use Bortuzzo/Engelland as the #6 going forward?
-I saw in one of the older GM threads, you had COLAIACOVO and GOLIGOSKI in the top 4, aren't you concerned that these defensive cores might be kind of weak and vulnerable?

we can't really afford to bring in a better option than niskanen for the top 4, and i wouldn't trust any of the younger guys to take that role. Despres was a mess when given big boy responsibilities last season, and i think he needs another season to adapt. I think you pencil nisky there with some serious finger crossing going on.

i like scuderi, but i think he'd be a nightmare in this current system. as great as he was with his stick down low, and on the pk... he was an absolute nightmare with the puck on his stick, trying to advance the puck.

Simon Despres ($0.840m) / Deryk Engelland ($0.567m)

I'm honestly shocked that people are okay with this defense.

-Niskanen is not a top 4 defenseman. He failed in Dallas in the top 4, and it was part of the reason he was moved in that deal. It was more of a throw in/dump, addition by subtraction. He might even be the best #5 in the league, however he is a #5. He won't work in the top 4. Stop it.

-Engelland is a #7 defenseman that throws some punches. Bylsma can't get enough of the fringe players. He's the only coach in the league that would have played Engelland over Despres this year. Engelland is bad. Don't let his "okay" last 2 games of the Boston series fool you. He's bad.

Despres is a #4-#5 next year, consistently.

@Froggy it's so crazy how much we disagree. I'm just so amazed sometimes how certain fans cannot see the flaws in such players.

If I was the coach, I would have told Despres preseason...You have 20-30 games to go be a rookie. Be a rookie. Get used to the NHL. This is January, February, March. No pressure. If he is playing worse than Engelland would in late March. THEN YOU SWITCH HIM. But what did good ole' dannie boy do? 2 shifts a night, oh you missed a dump? BENCHED. PRESS BOX FOR 3 WEEKS.

Can you image if you made a miss-click on your PC at work that made you sit out for 3 weeks and just watch? Despres has top pair talent. Engellend is a career fringe NHLer. Who would you give more playing time too for the future of your team?

-----------------------

I'm a huge Bylsma hater, but the system won a cup in 2009. This has also been our best defense since 2009.

Gonchar Orpik
Gill Scuderi
Eaton Letang

Haven't had a better defense since then. We won cup with Kunitz, Guerin, Talbot, Fedotenko in the top 6. We don't need more 5M wingers. We didn't need Morrow. We need better DEFENSE.

vs Montreal - no defense.
vs Tampa - injuries, not enough offense
vs Philly - complete collapse, no defensive structure at all, despres/strait came in and outplayed all defensive starters in the final 2 games
vs Boston - complete collapse, no defensive structure at all for games 1 & 2. Defense issues.

Penguins Problems:
1a) Defense
1b) Bylsma
1c) Goaltending

MAF did play his best in 2008, 2009 playoffs...when we had yup. Gill and Scuderi blocking the net. Just like Chara and Seidenberg. Just like Gill & Gorges did to us in 2010. Just like Pronger and Neidermayer and Beauchmin did in 2006. Need Defenseman.

We need a serious defensive upgrade, Letang aint nothing more than a 4th forward out there on the 5v5.

Letang-Despres
Orpik-Martin
Dumoulin-Engelland

Though, I could also see Harrington making the team. It'd be great for our cap situation in 2014 if so.

Byslma said himself that Despres was a "top 4 defenseman" so I'd be surprised if

Despres-Letang
Orpik-Martin
Niskanen-Bortuzzo

wasn't the defense next year, and to me it doesn't really look that bad assuming our young guys made some progress, and who knows where Dumuolin (sp?) and Harrington could be in their development...

Edit: beat me to it pcm.

I definitely don't see a place on this team for Niskanen if Letang re-signs. Maybe Shero can trade him to Florida for one of their gazillion forwards on EL contracts.

Why isn't there a place on this team for Niskanen if Letang resigns? When Letang misses time, he is a viable replacement. Contract doesn't matter as they are both locked in at what they are this upcoming season and he is a UFA after this season.

Not to say I wouldn't be against trading him if the right deal was there but to say there isn't a place if Letang re-signs is like saying there is no place for Jussi on this team for one season.

Because Dumoulin and Bortuzzo and maybe Harrington all are ready to get playing time. What's the point of having this pipeline of defense if we don't develop them?

More importantly, if Letang re-signs, and the intention is to keep Martin for 2014, then we will need these guys on EL contracts to play a bigger role. Better get them ready this year when they can start off playing more protected minutes.

All said, I like Niskanen. He was crud in the playoffs, so maybe now's not the time to trade him. But I think he could fill in in the top 4 for a weak team like Florida, Buffalo, Calgary, etc.

Threw something simple together...

FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.725m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Pascal Dupuis ($3.750m)
Jamie McGinn ($1.750m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) / James Neal ($5.000m)
Jussi Jokinen ($2.100m) / Brandon Sutter ($2.067m) / Beau Bennett ($0.900m)
Dustin Jeffrey ($0.688m) / Maxime Macenauer ($0.525m) / Joe Vitale ($0.550m)
Harry Zolnierczyk ($0.575m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Brooks Orpik ($3.750m) / Paul Martin ($5.000m)
Simon Despres ($0.840m) / Kris Letang ($3.500m)
Scott Harrington ($0.897m) / Stephane Robidas ($3.300m)
Robert Bortuzzo ($0.578m) / Jonathon Blum ($0.650m)
GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m)
Tomas Vokoun ($2.000m)
OTHER
Buyout: Tanner Glass ($0.000m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,543,333; BONUSES: $307,500
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $64,167

My main moves:
Colorado gets: Niskanen, we get Jamie McGinn
Dallas gets: 2015 2nd round pick and Matia Marcantuoni, we get Stephane Robidas and Matt Fraser
The Sun gets: Deryk Engelland, we get heat
Signed: Jonathan Blum and Maxime Macenauer as free agents

Won't go into the non-NHL moves I'd consider, endless possibilities.

Versatility exists. McGinn can be an energetic, rough complementary scorer...if he fails, Beau Bennett is here. Also considered: signing Clarke MacArthur.

Maxime Macenauer can be a good fourth line center that would bolster our speed and will be decent in the dot.

Wasn't wild about keeping Jussi Jokinen, but I wanted to make as few moves as possible because that's more realistic than total upheaval...

Harrington surprises everyone by making the team out of camp. Learns from his stylistic doppelganger Paul Martin and does well with sheltered minutes, paired with another strong d-man in Stephane Robidas. Dallas' glut of d-men that require waivers this year force their hand. We also pick up a high quality AHL wrist shot in Fraser that can handle spot duty in the NHL as a hired gun.

Blum is a RHS guy that is still trying to find his game...later in the year we end up putting him on waivers anyhow, it didn't work out...

Bortuzzo rotates in for tougher games and Harrington rotates out...but the difference in hockey sense between the two becomes too much to overcome in the playoffs and Bort is scratched through all 25 games...

Tanner Glass I used a compliance buyout on unfortunately, kind of cop-out, but there's no need for him at that price...even though he's not as bad as people make him out to be here sometimes...

When people blame HCDB for Despres I only wish they would mention he was a somewhat consistent scratch in WBS this very season as he was good at points and downright awful too.

I still have hopes for the guy but he needs to get his head out of his butt.

Nizzy,

I just wanted to say for the rest of the Board I'm sooooo happy you started this thread, clearly your thread starting skills are second to none.

That all being said here is two theoretical lineups..

First I'd try Kunitz on Malkin's line and put Beau with Sid but I just filled in names. The only way I see Cooke getting signed is if you trade/buyout both Glass and Juicy and then get another cheep forward to fill the spot... maybe Adams one more year.

OK here is with the removal of Juicy and Glass and adding Adams and Cooke with a slight raise (yes I know nobody sees a raise in his future)

Now I'm not sure what's going to happen the following year when Letang and Malkins raises kick in.... going back to my upper roster glass and juciy's contracts expire that year and they take care of themselves, while hoping for an increase in the cap.

I'm not that confident in having half our defense having little to no professional hockey/NHL experience.
