Tomas Vokoun officially retires (from the NT)

Postby Tomas on Fri Apr 26, 2013 11:17 am

Announced today. Vokoun does not want to be considered for 2014 Olympics team. He said that he is no longer top Czech goalie, plus "I'll be happy to spend the Sochi time with my family in Florida. I have been in Pittsburgh all by myself, and the Olympics will allow me to spend 10 extra days with my children. I decided that way some time ago, and so the national team is a closed chapter for me now."

Is Pavelec better? Neuvirth?

The general tone of the posts below the article is that Vokoun did a lot for Czech hockey, and that he deserves every praise he gets. At the same time, the goalie position is apparently the least of the problem for Czech hockey. Other than Pavelec (generally considered to be the No. 1 Czech goalie), here are names that appear often:
Neuvirth
Salak
Mrazek
Kovar*

* I believe he is the now considered the best Czech non-NHL goalie, even though he has (had?) some serious character flaws. In 2010, he had sexual relations with not just the wife of the 10-years older team captain, but with the girlfriend of another teammate. If you have Google Chrome, you can translate one of the articles that talked about this:

Sounds like Kovar knows how to have fun.

Kovar was the Flyer draft pick, right?

Yep, something like 2006. After this season, it appears nearly nearly certain that Kovar will try to make it in the NHL.

That is unbelievable that the Flyers draft pick is a philandering fool. That's just too rich.
