Despres and Bylsma

Postby Scott on Sun May 05, 2013 6:43 pm

In a previous post I was questioning playing Engelland over Despres or Bortuzzo for that matter. Those young players are in the future mix for the Pens and at some point they need playoff experience. They have a nice upside and now is as good as any to give them time.

Having said that I would modify that thought in that the first start of Despres in the playoffs should have been at home. He was not ready whatsoever for the attack by the Isle early on in the game. Add in the Isle being at home and the hostile environment.....yep it was a bit much. Despres > Engelland. Despres in his prime could be eight times > Engelland. Despres in his first playoff start in a high pressure situation on the road, against many odds...Engelland > Despres.
So in hindsight Despres should have gotten his feet wet at home and not game three on the road against a team with something to prove and building momentum. :!:

Bylsma gets paid very well to make these decisions. Gets paid very well to make the proper decisions. They could have anyone here at LGP to make a bad decision like that for a lot less money.

Luckily it didn't hurt them overall as we escaped with a win today but moving forward...better decisions have to be made on all fronts.

It doesn't matter. Neither of them would be play if Orpik was healthy.

I also dont think that playing Despres at home wouldve made a difference. The arena doesn't change how many times you trip over yourself.

What leads you to believe that Despres would have played with composure at home?
There's a reason that he's 7th or 8th on the depth chart.

Depres has been kind of a mess for weeks now.

Lets roll down the line and go with bortuzzo next time. Why not?

After game 2 Byslma was an idiot for not playing Beau Friggen Bennett enough, now he is an idiot for playing Despres on the road. If you are counting on either of these two to be the reason the Pens advance in the playoffs then good luck on that count. I like both players but neither is going to be the reason the pens advance to the next round. Its time for the veterans on this team to pick up their game and impose their will on an inferior opponent. If the Pens manage to lose in this round, its more than just the head coach that should take the fall for this debacle.

This is what happens when you constantly bench a young player when he's playing well earlier in the season. You wreck his confidence.

I think it's more of an indication of what happens when you play a non-elite rookie defensemen in the playoffs.

The Pens need Vitale's speed, tenacity and grit in the lineup.

I wouldn't mind that at this point, BUT I don't mind a 2-1 leader either.

If his confidence is shot at age 21 because he was benched during the season then Shero should trade him at the first opportunity. He will never amount to anything in this league if he is so emotionally fragile.

So when Despres is awesome, it's all his skill. However, when he doesn't play well, like today, it's Bylsma's fault?

Posted this in the GDT, but it's still the most representative thing of what Bylsma must have been thinking after the first two goals.

Yeah, I mean who analyzes past performances anyway. That would be as stupid as looking at game films. Wait no...

Is there some sort of prize at the end of the year for threads started? Can someone post a link to the standings?

Can't anyone just admit they were wrong? Can't depres just make the solid play? Can't Bylsma magically dole out confidence and good judgement? Can I get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to bump into a co-worker and make him hang up when he's trying to close a big sale, then blame it on my manager for wrecking my confidence?

I'll admit, I wanted to see Despres in over Engo after last game, and Despres went out and proved me wrong. He was pretty darn awful today.

I'm fully expecting to see Engo and TK in the lineup on Tuesday. I would like to say I'm confident to see Neal and Orpik too! Who knows, if Neal TRIED skating yesterday, I'll assume he's feeling half decent. He could be ready for Tuesday.

No the arena doesn't change but if Despres becomes numb to the environment, pressure, and other things he will be about the first HUMAN let alone player to do so.
Pressure and just an unstable environment can make players do things they wouldn't normally do. Add the fact he has never played in the playoffs until noon today against a tenacious, fast skating Islander team....is a recipe for exactly what happened today.

To be honest, I liked Despres game after this initial start. He seemed to calm down, but that start was awful.
