Logically, you'd think Crosby should have won. If voters punish him for missing the last month, it'd be kind of silly to give it to Ovechkin instead when he had pretty much one really good month to close the season. But then voters have done silly things in the past in finding reasons to give Ovechkin the MVP over Malkin.

Interesting Tavares made it for the Hart, and St. Louis for the Pearson.

Wow, if that is true, Toews got robbed.

It will be between Crosby and Tavares,

Crosby should get the Hart and Lindsay. He's been robbed of enough trophies due to injuries, including this year's Art Ross.

He shouldn't be getting hurt then. Or...when Orpik shot that puck:

He shouldn't have been standing there!

The Islanders made the playoffs, the Lightning didn't. They'll never give the MVP to a guy on a non-playoff team. You can make a pretty good argument for Tavares for what he did to elevate Moulson and Boyes and lead a pretty crappy team to the playoffs, but it pretty much always goes to one of the top scorers on one of the best teams in the league.

Ovechkin probably takes this by a nose. Right or wrong.

Strong finishes are fresher in the voters' minds and more important in them as well. Tavares is a good pick because he had little help. Crosby will probably finish 2nd if history repeats itself.

Here's the voting from 2000 -- voting points (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th place votes):

Chris Pronger 396 (25-9-11-8-4); Jaromir Jagr 395 (18-22-9-4-4); Pavel Bure 346 (11-18-16-9-3)

Jagr led the NHL in points despite missing 19 games (played in 63), Bure led the NHL in goals by a mile while missing 8 games (74 GP) and Pronger was very good that year, pretty dominant from the backline but it's rare for a d-man to win the Hart Trophy (voters believe they have their own award).

Jagr missed a quarter of the year, still led the NHL in points, was alone on his team and lost it by a fraction...I have a feeling the same thing happens again here...

True definition of this award says it should be Tavares. Its a shame the media does not vote the way the award states. On that note It will be Sid or Ovie.

I think it's clearly Ovechkin. He carried his team down the stretch. The Pens were excellent without Crosby.

the definition of the award is galatically stupid, so i'm fine when people vote based on different criteria.

I agree with this.

If they punish Crosby for missing the last month of the season, even though he was specutacular for the 3 months he did play, and award AO the award for playing lights out for 1 month, but sucking the other 3, then it's a joke IMO.

And agree, writers sometimes have a "what have you done for me lately" mentality and they will see AO with the strong finish and give it to him.

The "controller disconnected" gif should be shown to every voter and should disqualify AO. Inexcusable performance there.

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 1h
Ovechkin, Crosby and Tavares named Hart Trophy finalists. I had Crosby and Tavares in my top 3 on my ballot but Toews over Ovechkin instead

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 1h
Crosby, Ovechkin, Tavares named Hart Trophy finalists. My ballot had Crosby and Toews 1-2 followed by Ovechkin and Tavares.

Bob also had Brodin as the rightful #1 for the Calder...he didn't finish top-3. It's a shame that not all writers take this process seriously...

I think AO gets it. When he scores they were like 20-5. When he didn't, they were 8-19 or something ridiculous like that.

The Hart is for the most valuable to their team. If AO went down, that team was toast. Crosby went down, and I think it hurt his case more that the Pens could have and still did win without him.

AO winning it this year isn't more outrageous than him winning over malkin in '08. that was butt.

I'd vote for Tavares and AO over Crosby just based on the idea of who is more valuable to their team.

If OV wins, someone could create a montage of clips from the first 2/3 of the season when OV stood around...skated away from hits...and watched the other team cycle and score from his team's blueline...all with the title "2013 NHL Most Valuable Player" at the bottom. That would look good for our sport.

I'd actually love to see Taveras win it. He really put that team on his shoulders to get them into the playoffs. That being said...I hope someone separates both his shoulders tomorrow afternoon.

I agree that if they actually voted based on who's actually the most valuable to their team, Crosby shouldn't have won, he shouldn't even be a finalist probably. But that's not the way they've voted for the award in recent years. Actually it's almost exclusively gone to the leading scorer in recent years with the exception of Perry winning it a couple years ago.

If they vote based on what the award actually is for, Ovechkin or Tavares make a better choice than Crosby. If they're being consistent with the way they usually vote, I have a hard time getting how Ovechkin should have won over Crosby. But again, it's hard to understand how Ovechkin was MVP over Malkin in both 08 and 09 but the voters figured out a way to do it.
