'13 Playoffs Game 1 vs OTT - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Wed May 15, 2013 8:17 am

Pens win 4-1

- Not an ideal outing, but more than good enough to win game 1 (5 W's done, 11 more to go)
- Playoff rules were in full effect, very few calls and the Pens "grit & sandpaper" went to work. Pens kept their heads up.
- Vokoun played well, but did look shaky at points. CBC coverage showed a shot of him pre-game with a cool sleeve of tats!
- Duper has been a MONSTER! When he was shaken up, it hit me... the Pens cannot lose him. Put him in the Conn Smythe Running ASAP!
- A shortie!!!! These kill opponents Power Plays as they focus them to play back and conservative.
- Big clean hit by Orpik on Gryba (Hab fans rejoice). Sens D didn't fare as well with only 5 guys, Weiroch likely to replace
- HCDB made some adjustments between each period. Shifting Kunitz to Sid's line seemed positive (forced Ottawa to change coverage)
- Iggy just keeps racking up points on the PPlay. Is he now the Pens Play specialist? Better be, cause his even strength is sort of :slug:
- James Neal had good hop but the penalties have to stop, could cost games. If you take a penalty, earn the two minutes
- Chris Neil manged to get Sid riled up on one shift. Sid retaliated. Neil will drive Sid in the face.... in the face... in the face & show toothless grin claiming Crosby initiated it
- Sens 3rd line (Greening & Co) looked the most dangerous, especially vs. Pens 3rd D pairing of Engellend & Murray. Curious to see if the Pens keep that matchup

Because Malkin played a great complete game last night, he was indisputably good in round 1.
Kennedy looked good again
Vitale would step into traffic if he thought it would provide the slightest benefit to his team.

- It is the mancrush season, must be all the facial hair 8-)
- Speaking of mancrush, CBC's Glenn Healy loves Andersson & gushes about him constantly. That is until he plays like a sieve, then Healy is back to his acidic self

Glenn Healy's thoughts are so enjoyable to listen to. I don't even care what he's talking about, just love his delivery.

Shackles off~ round 1 in the rearview!
Gene- Chris Kunitz – Duper (PK and shortie goal), great game.
Physical D and jamming around the penguins net. Every penguin was hitting the sens often last night.
D to F gap control looking good.
Brooks and D Murray; guys bounce off of them.
Watching the penguins power play full throttle; rapture. ;)
Tomas Vokoun, you are exactly what the penguins need now.
J Iginla; stealth- like getting points.
B Morrow, not scoring, but in and around goal and physical.
Kris Letang played smart; defense and on the PP.
Game 1 adjustment of Murray and D Engelland goes to Coach Blysma; 1 zip versus lgp.com coaches. :P

Full throttle for game 2. Less shots and walk away from sens trash talk.

He's sort of grown on me over the years, but he's not afraid to blame/shame/flame any player, including superstars. But, he beat the Pens in the playoffs long ago, and far away

- Andersson came out to play the puck on dump ins, was effective in limiting Pens dump & chase effectiveness, BUT he did look a little shaky in handling puck

Good, solid win. I think most of the Sens' shots after the first period came from the outside, and the D did well in front of the net to box out or clear rebounds.

Sens were a bit flat, not sure we can count on that in the second game. The talent gap is clear, I think, though.

Murray & Engelland is a scary pairing, but mostly because of Engelland. Murray clears the crease at least, and tough he's too slow to get out on the shooters he's so big it doesn't matter :p puck hits him anyways
Vitale had so much speed at times yesterday
Kennedy got Pens a powerplay again. Defenders keep getting beat by him on the wall plays
PK was lucky at 2-1.
I'll let Neal be excused for the two last infractions. Giving Karlsson a little something for his dive at 4-1 I can live with. But his first one was just undisciplined. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Neal is worse than Malkin.

Good win and still lots of room for improvement. A speedy team that has no strategy other then to skate hard for 60 minutes is our kryptonite. So glad the Isles are out, the Kings and Hawks could cause problems down the road but the Bruins and Rangers are even slower than the Sens,

Did not like Engellend-Murray, first goal the both drifted to the points, if one stays where they should be then the goal never happens.

Would anyone else like to see Despres get paired with Murray at times? I think it would play to both of their strengths.

The look on HCDB's face spoke a thousand words. If Neal has a flaw, its the undisciplined penalties.

Two offensive zone penalties while protecting a lead...one away from the puck. It just can't happen.

I mean I guess his move around Karlsson was to the word a penalty but not with how the game was called. Then a Sen gets in his direct line and gets run over. Whatever I'll take him making that move on Karlsson and running a guy over in a 4-1 game. Sends a message that the Pens aren't going to sit back on the lead, they're going to continue to go through you.

That might have been orpik's best game in a long time made some huge plays to prevent goals

I like how he got totally mugged by Neil and the refs did nothing, just nothing. Brooks in a headlock getting punched and the refs are clueless.

Sens speed is a million miles slower than the Isles.

Pens keep peppering shots its gonna be a feast for them.

Chris Neil is an evil person. On and off the ice.

Despres deserves a chance to replace Engelland.

Anderson is the only Ottawa player that can be able to keep the Sens in it. But he looked average last night.

Pens will be up 3-0 very quickly and go no more than 5.

no one seemed to be stand out last night as I was watching. it was a real team effort and everyone contributed, which is not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination. The sens looked downright lost at times. I'm not sure if that's more because of them having such a long break or more due to the Pens playing that well.

- Ottawa looks like a much better matchup for the Penguins than the Islanders presented. The Pens were much more physical last night because they could actually catch up to them.

- It was nice to see that even when Vokoun had a shaky first period, he still only let in one soft goal. If those are going to be his "bad" periods, he will never see the bench again for the rest of this postseason.

- Please tell me that Bylsma returning to the Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis and Iginla-Malkin-Neal lines in the third was for some specific reason. And please tell me that it will return to what it should be at the start of Game 2.

Vitale and Kennedy continue to make their presence felt.

How has Chris Neil never been suspended in his career? Dude is a major POS.

Morrow played a pretty solid game. Nothing outstanding, but the speed difference betweens the Sens and Isles is going to allow him to have a bigger impact this series.

Engellend-Murray was a disaster. Engellend sucks and his lack of talent, hockey sense, and puck moving ability forces Murray to do way way way too much. Despres or even Eaton needs to be in the lineup over Engellend. I understand why they want Engellend in the lineup (Neil is a POS), but the negatives of having him in the lineup far outweigh the 30 seconds of usefullness he has every game.
