'13 Playoffs Game 2 vs OTT - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Sat May 18, 2013 9:00 am

Pens win 4-3

- Sid was spectacular. The speed & skill with which he plays is unmatched.
Spoiler:
Last night Even Don Cherry said Sid was the best player in the world, twice.

- Morrow also stepped up & was a factor. Beautiful tip on a perfect tippable shot by Martin, tons o' grinding, gripping and grinning
- 6 W's down, 10 to go.
- Vokoun played well & made two monster stops on breakaways. But he's let in a crappy one two games in a row... just sayin'
- CBC's pregame video montage was the best ever. Unable to link to it but hopefully someone will. Please.
- Karlsson was not very good. He got less minutes as the game wore on. Sens cannot win with him playing poor & Anderson out of the net.
- Lehner played very well for Ottawa, would not be surprised to see him (and Spezza for game 3)
- Iggy simply cannot get a call (nor can many other for that matter)
- Greening scored again in the 3 line matchup vs. Engelled - Murray d pairing. Watch for Sens to try to further exploit with last change in Ottawa
- CEC was rocking, see you in round 3 8-)

I expect to see Anderson in game 3. I think that's the reason he was pulled, to protect his psyche from having to endure a 4+ goal night. Only goal 2 was really his fault, and I can't blame him for cheating given how lost Karlsson was on the play.

Will TV have to lose a game before fleury gets another go? Or does MAF get a start given Thomas's rocky few GA?

I think its going to take a horrendous performance by TV or a loss for 29 to return. I think disco will play the hot hand.

This is Tomas Vokouns' job to lose now. He has played great and when he does let in a soft one, he stabilizes things in a way MAF simply doesn't. At no point did it feel like the Pens were in any danger last night. Oh, and even with giving up 3 last night, he still has a 1.70 GAA with a .945 save %.

Yep, MAF is nowhere near coming back if this is what Vokoun is gonna do.

Big W to get to maintain home-ice for the first time in 1000 years...

-This team is so stacked with talent that it's really not fair. If one of our top guns is on, they're really hard to stop as a 4 line unit.
-2nd game in a row (and 3 of the last 4) that we came out and dictated the pace early...then trailed off a bit. Give OTT credit...there is no quit in that team.
-Letang needs to get his head out of his butt, but you can't really blame him for trying to clear the puck from 15ft outside of the blue paint. What was TV thinking?
-Speaking of Vokoun, minus the 2 huge saves he made on breakaways, he was pretty bad last night. He gave up some bad/soft goals, and untimely goal, bad rebounds, and was horrible playing the puck. He needs to be much better, because there really is no quit on OTT.
-Sid is just so fun to watch. It's incredible to see him play at the speed he does while simultaneously slowing everything down. Malkin may be smoother (when he's on), but Sid is just power and precision. Awesome.
-Please sit Great Britain. Please. I like him but...woof. Is Eaton hurt?
-Without the Isles speed to contend with, the Pens can fall back to Gozar the Gozarian mode (i.e. choose the form of your destructor). You wanna open the game up? okay. You wanna get physical? sure. You wanna rely on you Vezina candidate to shut us down? -kthnxbai.

Refs start out calling actual penalties, team doesn't learn, keeps taking penalties, refs swallow whistles. I understand not wanting to affect a game too much but when a hooking is so obvious that the player committing the infraction has his stick yanked out of his hands and it goes flying it should be called. When a stick comes down on another stick and slashes it out of someone's hands it should be called. I'm surprised they called the boarding committed on Geno last night as that play has been let go quite a few times.

The only good coming from the refs eventually swallowing the whistle is the Pens are taking advantage of the no calls as well. Geno and Morrow the most IMO. Stick infractions all over but pretty much never a call. Playoffs.

Watching this team is a such a treat right now, even when we lose. I'm still thrilled to see Iggy and Morrow in a Pens uniform. Enjoy it!

Speaking of Morrow, I haven't been that impressed, but I think it's because I wasn't paying attention. It's great watching him in the trenches, he may have lost a step, but he's built for the playoffs. It must be cool for those sitting near the glass, to watch it in person. If we make it out of this round, I think he's going to be even more valuable against the Rags or Bruins.

So far, this series kind of feels like the Canes series a few years ago. The Canes never gave up and kept coming, but I never felt like they were a threat. The Sens can still win this series of course, but I don't feel it so far. There is also a pretty big difference between them and the Islanders, when they are attacking....

The Engelland Murray pairing will not be together in Ottawa. It simply can't be, not with Ottawa getting last change.

I expect to see Eaton in for Engo.

Nice to get the win, but far from a stellar performance except from 87.
TV was shaky on the first 2 goals.
Shot totals are misleading, sens had as many good chances as the pens, maybe better.
If engeland is playing under 9 minutes, he's hurting the other dmen who have to play extra, I know why he's there, but you can't wear the top guys out.
Jussi needs to go in for sutter, he's hurt or just not playing well.
Orpik and martin were good, Letang had a couple "what's he doing?" moments.
Geno was flying and didn't get drawn into dumb penalties, Neal is struggling right now, iginla is a PP specialist at this point.
4th line I didn't really notice so they must have done ok.
Geno and iginla had good chances on Lehner, got to elevate the puck boys!

All that said its 2-0 pens which is great, a win is a win and all that but theres still work to be done on "their game".

Best game of the playoffs for:

Sid (incredible, even by his standards)
Martin (all the way back from his injury?)
Morrow (big impact, huge goal)

And I thought the bottom 6 had a strong game. My one concern is not having a reliable #6 D. Tough to lean on 5 for most of the game. I think Eaton can have success against this team.

A few sloppy plays aside, I was happy with the Pens.

Cannot have Engo and Murray paired together. Too slow. Get Eaton or Despres or even Bortuzzo in the lineup.

Really would rather not see Engelland in the lineup. In particular, pairing him with Murray is a disaster. I can understand if they're hesitant to trust Depres, but unless Eaton is injured, I'd much rather see him in the lineup.

It was frustrating that we kept letting them hang around, but I can't say that I ever felt like the game was truly in danger.

The puck possession in the offensive zone that prevented the Sens from pulling their goalie for so long was a thing of beauty.

Game could have easily been 8-3. A LOT of close calls and posts in there.

Probably Vokoun's weakest effort so far, but he made the big saves when he needed to.

It's the pens DNA to attack and pounce, and break goalies.
Sid got his legs, his range of vision, shooting and passing; all back! That is how you grab them by the throat and suffocate. From the warm-up, I got the feeling that the sens were off, just not focused on a game 2 .
Many more chances in the 1st; Evgeni with the puck off of the post, Morrow, side of the net.

Defense needs to tighten up; more forward help . Chris Kunitz continues to hit everybody.

Pk , in the 3rd great. The shift with 2- 1/2 mins; golden. Kept the puck in the pens zone, keep the sens chasing the puck, and kept the goalie in the net. Was it B Morrow, Pascal, and Sid? Well done gentlemen.
Kyle Turris has all the tools to be good.
Inside the Consol they showed Pittsburgh's Gulf tower was flashing red goals lights around the top every time the penguins scored. :thumb: Post-game it was bright gold.

Somebody needs to relieve Chris Neil of his innards.

Onto Ottawa. Dear Pens, I am available to travel as a lucky charm. fingers-crossed. ;)
ps~ all those taking sens in five or sweep :P :!:

- So happy for Morrow. Warrior. Great to see him get the GW goal and also help dominate puck possession in the last few minutes in Ottawa's zone. I agree that Morrow, Iginla, and Murray could all have their best series thus far if we can make it to the Bruins/Rangers. These guys are built for a grinding, physical, slower paced series.
- Yes, TV looked a little more shaky last night... but it is still just a different feeling with him in net compared to MAF IMHO... I still feel more confident TV can hold on to the lead or help give the team just enough to win, and that we're not going to have an embarassing disaster, as I often do with MAF in net the last few post-seasons. I hope they ride Vokoun until he truly loses a game for the team. Four wins in a row.
- The NBC announcers commented last night that the 2nd and 3rd periods seemed to really slow down in overall pace, which they commented they thought was to the advantage of the Senators... I just don't know if I agree with that. The Senators at times look like they can exceed our play with their breakout and extended offensive zone time... but I agree with others that it just seems like we can play to any team's style of play and match it, if not exceed it, right now.
- I agree you may have to look at changing up the Murray-"Great Britain" pairing for Ottawa lol... but otherwise, don't get too crazy with changes until Ottawa proves they can stop it. One of our great football coaches down here at the University of Oklahoma would often say, "Run it until they stop it".

Second video on TSN has the clip of Karlsson's lowlights and his "Are you blind?" answer regarding the first goal.

He's obviously not ready, and I hope the Sens keep playing him. A total liability. Cooke outskated him more than once, let alone what Crosby and Malkin did to him.

Based on his first two games this series Karlsson probably should've spent Wednesday doing something other than playing golf with Alfredsson.

-Engo has sucked out loud, Murray was far more effective with Nisky. I'd like to see:
Orpik-Martin
Letang-Eaton/Despres
Murray-Niskanen
-If Engo is scratched will HCDB be able to resist playing Glass?
-Adams and Sutter are offensive black holes but are playing solid D. Wouldn't be shocked if Sutter has an injury as he just looks 'off' with the puck.
-TV plays till he loses, I have no problem with that.
-The PP looked like a shambolic disinterested mess when it should've been burying the sens, the globetrotter talent display is either red hot or icy cold.
-Blessed with good health for what seems like the first time ever, the top 6 is just scary (and long may it remain so).

not sure i'm buying the 'sutter may be injured' thing. why would rs bring in jussi at the deadline if he's going to be scratched in favor of an injured sutter. if the argument is that sutter has been good defensively, that's fine, but a couple weeks ago everyone was jazzed about potentially dressing 4 scoring lines. now we have 2. the 3rd line has to be a threat to score the occasional goal in case the top 2 have an off night.
