He's the only guy on the team producing at a pace not seen in this league in over 20 years. 16 points in 11 games from a d-man is tied for the team lead, ahead of Crosby while leading the team in plus/minus and minutes played. Yeah he's had defensive mistakes that has lead to goals, but his point production more than makes up for it. He scored 10 points last series. The other team had 11 goals. Think about that.

Well, he has three goals, but none of them count because the team was already up 2-0, 3-0 and 2-0 when he scored, so there was no pressure or the team was already destined to score four goals or whatever rationale it was that somehow invalidated Vokoun's stats.

He has 13 assists but eight of them are second assists and seven came on the powerplay where he is surrounded by guys who've won scoring titles. Also points scored on Wednesdays don't count for poorly conceived reasons known only to me, so Kris Letang has actually scored no goals and one assist. That's hardly MVP calibre production.

Only 4 other d-men have produced more points in an entire playoff season in the last 12 years than he has in 2 series. That's ridiculous production.

I've always admired his ability to pass the puck to a variety of first ballot hall of famers, and he's hardly given the puck away in our own zone at all. I would much rather have him than Nick Lidstrom, Chris Pronger or Scott Niedermayer.

Being serious for a moment though; no.

Vokoun hasn't played in 3/4 of the games although he's played well enough to give his team a chance to win all of the ones he did play in. He has at most stolen one game and he has also given up several soft goals.

Sure, but those soft goals have come when the team was already certain of winning, so they don't matter. In fact none of the goals against him matter because the team was obviously going to win, and none of his saves counted because the team was obviously going to win, so Tomas Vokoun actually has managed to produce the aforementioned seven game shutout streak, and has done so without facing a single shot!

His numbers are impressive, but not nearly as impressive as Letang's and certainly not the best this league has seen in 20 years.

I think we already agreed that stats don't tell the entire story, yeah? Letang has done the job he is paid to do in the offensive zone, though his stats do flatter him because of the number of assists, particularly powerplay and second assists. In our own end, he has caused many of us to develop a bizarre kind of palsy as our faces repeatedly contort in fear and/or exasperation any time he goes anywhere near the puck.

Vokoun has come in and done his job, he hasn't been spectacular. I don't understand why we are giving the MVP to a guy who has simply done what's asked of him. He got paid $2 million to be the backup in case Fleury faltered. Fleury did, and Vokoun is now doing his job. He's not MVP.

...why does his salary matter? Ovechkin is being paid $9.5 million to do nothing other than score goals and lollop around like the missing link, does that invalidate his forthcoming Richard and tendancy to stare vacantly into space?

I'd give it to Paul Martin, honestly. Without so many people contributing offensively, you can't convincingly justify handing it to one over the other. Martin has been an absolute rock in the Pens' zone.

From the official 3 stars standings:

1. Neal
2. Vokoun
3. Letang
4. Tied: Crosby, Dupuis, Orpik

If the national media voted today, it would definitely be letang right? Vokoun isn't on their radar and Sid + Geno cancel each other out.

Not saying its the right choice, but its fun to speculate.

If the national media voted today, they'd go with Vokoun. The goalie change is the story of the Penguins playoffs so far this year.

Good luck to Shero, if he has to deal with two Conn Smythe winners in July.

Vokoun for sure. We would be sitting at home without him.

I love the posting here sometimes...

Letang is a piece of trash! Only 16 points? He's a bum! He is single handedly responsible for every goal against, even when he is on the bench.
Vokoun can't win anything? 6-1 with a 1.8 GAA and a 94+ save %? BAH! Trash!
Fleury is "the piece"! Can't win without him! Remember when he won that game 5 years ago?!
Iginla was a wasted pickup! Slow and stupid! What? Over a point a game, contributing to an incredible PP that is winning games and making a difference in a way it hasn't in years? Leadership and grit? Nonsense!
Etc, etc etc. There is no pleasing some people.

Are these arguments occurring in your head? No one has ignored Letang's production when citing his miscues and they certainly haven't scoffed at it. No one has claimed that Vokoun sucks, the argument is that he's just doing his job. Who is arguing that Iginla is a wasted pickup and who has belittled his production?

I see this question akin to asking what piece of gold shines the brightest. They are all gold but one piece may have a little more luster than the others.
