Sports are nothing but escapism, like film and television. Why would I or anyone choose to be "realistic" about something that serves as an outlet to get away from some of the more dreary realities of the parts of life that actually matter?

No reason PGH can't turn this series around. Not saying they WILL... but they most certainly CAN.

It's a good thing some of you folks weren't around at Valley Forge. ;)

it would be interesting to know if anyone from the Pens franchise actually take time to read some of these posts. I know you guys and they might be thinking - why listen to bunch of fans with no experience. But sometimes, you might just find a sweet suggestion, if you have no valid reason to disapprove a tactic then any research can only help...

I highly doubt anyone in the Pens brass cares what people on a messageboard say. Nor should they.

If they did, that would be grounds for immediate termination and banned from coaching or administering a hockey franchise ever again.

The Pens' brass probably does browse through here every now and then, but not for HC advise or who to draft. They likely look for comments about the arena, the fan experience of home games, reaction to public appearances by the players or other promotions the Pens do, etc.

Of course these forums are monitored. Forums are mined by a huge range of groups in order to sell the data back to businesses and advertisers about their customers. A self-aware league like the NHL--one trying to gain a greater market share in the US--surely cares about what fans think about a range of issues.

Fan sentiment has been known to influence some team decisions. For example, a player might be retained because he's popular. Or fan sentiment might reinforce other types of decisions.

More than that though, we're not in the 90s anymore. Most young players grew up with an awareness of forums. Perhaps they even participated as fans before making it to the NHL. The curiosity to see what we're saying must be irresistible to some players; especially after a great game.

I also believe that enthusiasts have a great influence on casual fans. The take-aways from discussions we have here gets spread around socially. Through this, we can influence the mood of the fan base as a whole, and that certainly feeds back to the team.
