New Rule 2013-14: NHL makes visors mandatory

Postby Kovy27 on Tue Jun 04, 2013 6:10 pm

Starting in 2013-14, the NHL will force players to wear visors for the first time ever.

That was the news out of Tuesday’s NHL-NHLPA Competition Committee meeting, in which mandatory visor use was grandfathered in.

(TSN’s Darren Dreger reports the cutoff is for any player that’s played 26 or more NHL regular-season or playoff games. Any player with less will have to wear one.)

So basically only rookies have to. What about after they have reached the 26 games mark?

They still have to wear it.

The 26 games is referring to players who are currently in the league. If Beau Bennett didn't want a visor (just for example, he's played 30 games (26 reg, 4 playoff)), he wouldn't be forced to wear it. However, because Rob Bortuzzo has only played 21 NHL games, he has to wear the visor.

It just like the mandatory helmet rule from a while back ago. Granfather clause like when McTavish was the only one allowed to go helmetless.

Good change. Fewer double minors for high sticking in the future.

Stupid. If they don't want to wear a visor don't make them wear a visor. Too much safety crap these days.

Why don't they just take hitting out of the game as well. Hey I know, we will have them all skate around in dresses and they can hit the puck with their purses. This way hardly anyone would get hurt.

Remember the motto, Give Blood; Play Hockey. Now it's ohhhhh don't hit me don't you see the stop sign on my jersey! Weak.

I wonder how this will effect fighting. Will the scrappers drop the gloves and helmet now??

You wouldn't catch me dead without a helmet and a visor on the ice in the NHL, thoes pucks go to damn fast.

Yeah, why even require them to wear any equipment? I mean, it really changes the game for us fans. I would much rather watch a player without a visor on than with it. And I know the game is going to be so different.

Heaven forbid they do something that has zero impact on the play of the game (actually, physicality will remain the same and might actually increase slightly as a result). Seriously, people will complain about anything.

Good change.

I remember back in the mid 80s when I started to watch hockey, when they went to mandatory helmets, but some of the older players were grandfathered in.

I remember at some point, there were 6 players left w/o a helmet and that was a big trivia question we used to ask at school. (I can't even remember the answer now).

Craig McTavish was the last.

As I have said in post above.

even after seeing NHLers with horrific eye injuries you think it's worth it to play beer league without facial protection?

I would never play without a cage. Visor doesn't offer enough protection.

for perhaps the first time you and I TOTALLY agree on something. I like my eyes AND my teeth. nobody's paying me to play hockey so I'm protecting as much as I can. it doesn't take a 100 mph slap shot to damage an eye or break your jaw.

Read that 73% of NHL players already wear visors. Every league but the NHL had made them mandatory up until now. Players had to wear them or the full shield from the time they're kids until they were in the AHL, this is a big deal for the league but isn't for the players, imo.

why? I'm not trying to bust your balls but what makes you think that you won't get a stick or puck in the eye? I'm just trying to understand. it'd can't be the old, "do you know what the chances of that are?" because surely you have to know that Steve Yzerman and Marc Staal thought the same thing.

I can't see as well with one and the stupid things fog up on me. They are annoying. And I'd have a greater chance of being in a car accident to and from the game then being hit in a spot where the visor would have certainly made a difference. I haven't seen that many injuries from pucks coming upwards where a visor actually made a difference. Look at Sid, shattered jaw and he has a visor on. And when you look at the angle of the puck on Staal I don't even think a visor would have prevented that either. Pucks rise up, there is a huge area still for those and sticks to still do damage.

interesting. I don't agree that it's worth the risk mostly because for me, ANY risk of eye damage is too much. the car accident thing, I'd ask do you drive to the rink without wearing a seat belt and with your airbags disconnected?
the league I play in requires facial protection for all but the elite level (all former college and juniors players) but there is a league in town in which you can be playing in your very first hockey game ever and have no facial protection. those guys have no idea of the risks and it just baffles me that they allow that.
free country though. God Bless America. :)
oh, and if you ever do decide to go with a visor I recommend these: http://hockeyfaceshields.com/Home_Page.html
one of my teammates owns a small hockey shop and he tried this one out and said there was no fog whatsoever and that was this past Sunday at a rink in the Deep South on a warm, humid day.

We should expect a response of this type from a LGP'er named FALLENHero. Ironic, but predictible.

I'll throw this out there. If someone died from a shot to the face that would be deflected by a visor, Insurance for hockey could go way up, and that would reflect in ticket price.
