Anyone know if/think that Ownership lost money?

Postby Godric on Sat Jun 08, 2013 4:25 am

Just curious. Spent a **** ton of money on the roster and it produced about 4 less home games than it should have.... 4 games doesn't sound a lot to me but I don't know anything.

I don't know if it still applies, but the rule of thumb was the budget was for regular season plus 1 round of playoffs. They sold out every game again this year. I would imagine from a fiscal standpoint, it was considered the best year since '09, as a percentage of games played.

IIRC it was said before it was something like, get out of the first round to break even but that was a couple of years ago. 8 home playoff games should do it for sure.

IIRC, the owners all lose obscene amounts of money in every single season.

Did players get paid their full salaries? I don't see how they didn't lose money, playing half a season, getting half the revenues, but still paying whole salaries.

They probably made money, rule used to be 2nd round to make money.

However, rounds one and two there were was thousands of students at those games and plenty of tickets floating around which had to hurt their bottom line more than people admit.

Also, they played under the cap so that probably balanced it out. Still believe judging by their actions they don't make as much as people think.

you don't pay players in the playoffs. one month of a prorated half season salary was nothing.

I'm sure they were expecting at least one more home game at the VERY least at the start of this series. FO SHIZZLE.

The sell penguins labeled junk and make truckloads of cash. Much more than they do from ticket sales from a playoff run

I believe all team merch and Internet crap is run through the league like in the other sports. But not 100% certain.

Pretty much all budgeting is done for the regular season, making the playoffs all "profit". So, no.

They get a cut of that and they get whatever markups inside the arena or other pens controlled stores. Of course a cut of concessions and then corporate sponsorships. Also TV deals are finally starting to pay well.

Oh I thought you were just talking about things like t shirts. Yes they, IIRC, got a sweet arena deal especially with food and beer. But it goes back to what people want to believe depending on their views at that time (this isn't directed at you).

They jack up pricing to absurd levels, sales go down, students galore, but they got a better arena deal with lots more money coming in, yet they cut back on everything they do.

If they are making piles of cash with these new deals why the need to push pricing to that point and cut expenses? If its to maximize revenue a few dollars that is pretty sad for fans especially after all the new money and lowered cap provided by the city and state cutting the deal/new CBA. If its because they aren't making the money they thought then something else is wrong.

But my point never changes that something doesn't quite seem right.

The rule of thumb was second round to break even. This CBA the players take less, and travel costs were way down with no trips to the West Coast. Playing 8 home games in the playoffs undoubtedly resulted in a pretty healthy top and bottom line. There shouldn't be any issue in spending to the cap any time soon.

No, the salaries were prorated.

Here's the question I have: what was total payroll? I know the Pens had lots of cap space before the made the acquisitions of Morrow, Iginla, Murray and Jussi. Having a salary cap and spending to the cap doesn't guarantee turning a profit because all NHL teams would spend to the cap and they don't.

I'd have to guess that after taking on the contracts they did, the Pens probably broke even or lost money. It's very clear that the Pens ownership values contending for Cups more important that profits. That is why I think they may not be making money this season.
