Giles Meloche Resigns

Postby topshelf on Sun Jun 09, 2013 9:19 pm

Per TribSports twittter account.

You've gotta think this is a positive thing. I've posted in another thread that I've heard other NHL goalies (Quick and Smith, for example) rave about how their own goalie coach has helped change their game and make them better, and we've never heard squat about Meloche. I think he was a "country club" member from the earlier days that finally was squeezed out.

So far, so good (albeit small).

EDITED:

Here is the link:

http://triblive.com/sports/penguins/4164503-74/fleury-coach-penguins#axzz2VfYcySdG

Mentions that he is EXPECTED to resign this week, but will more than likely take a job as a scout. Also mentions Mike Bales from WBS as a possible replacement.

Interesting quote:

Mike Bales, 40, is the leading candidate to replace Meloche. Bales has spent the past two seasons as goaltending coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Penguins' AHL affiliate. He has worked closely with player-development coach Bill Guerin, who over the past year has emerged as a leading voice among Shero's hockey operations staff.

If they keep MAF but improve on the coaching ability then I'm ok with it too I guess. Really don't see how MAF stays though.

This all depends. I think it is now obvious that Fleury wasn't being properly coached, as the same mistakes were occurring. Not putting all of the blame on Meloche, but you gotta shake it up.

Gilles Meloche was a terrible goaltender. There's only room for improvement.

that I think is a good start. I'm not sold on a wholesale coaching reboot but if MAF is going to stay something needs to change.

Removing familiarity is a good way to continue progression. That being said, still hope MAF is gone.

Dan Bylsma wasnt a very good player and...uh I kid I kid.

Just saying. Not complaining at all that he is gone. But we have been blaming coaches around here for a lot
so I dont have my hopes up that he was the real problem that is all I am saying.

honestly I screamed all playoffs and for the last couple of years for Fleury to be gone but I will say that if there is a wholesale coaching change top to bottom, I would be willing to give him one more year. one thing you have to admit about fluery is that he is probably one of the most athletically talented and gifted goaltenders in the league.

Meloche is a waste as acoach! He's actually a scout who works the Quebec area from what I understand. He only does goalie "coaching" when he happens to be in town. This move sucks and is more of the status quo.

EDIT: I can't delete this post...I read this as Gilles Meloche Re-signs! :)

And Kyle Boller could throw a football through the uprights from midfield while kneeling, probably one of the best arms the NFL has ever seen.

I feel nauseous when I see this said about Fleury. He's athletically gifted, that's been granted a bagillion times, stop the friggin' puck now.

I just hope that Meloche isn't a "sacrificial lamb" for saving Bylsma's job.

If the Pens determine that the goalie coach was the downfall of the team, then they will have about as much respect as the Pirates in a lot of people's eyes...

What a message that would send. That would certainly give this organization a "zero tolerance" for failure sort of reputation. First, the sort-of goalie coach, next, the dude who drives the zamboni.

If you keep Bylsma, there is no way you can keep MAF. Only way Pens should even consider keeping him is if a new head coach is hired.

Given Meloche's history with the franchise, the Pens gave him the opportunity to resign and save face.

To me, this is a sign everyone else will be fired.
