Letang has a rare combination of offensive ability and hitting power. He is not a huge player, but he has some serious lower body leverage when he applies his hits. If Shero has his name out there as being available via trade, then the penguins will definitely get a decent return.

I have no problem with Malkin and Martin on the point for PP1 and Despres/Niskanen on PP2

Wasn't Meyers god awful last year after he signed that big extension?? I would also think Letang would bring more than him and Ott.

They won't pay Letang more than $7M. I think he's probably worth $6.5 to $7M. They aren't going anywhere near $8M. They wouldn't do that even if they had the cap space to do it. I don't see them re-signing Niskanen after his contract is up so that frees up almost $1.5M. The only D-man signed beyond next season is Martin. Vokoun is likely replaced by a cheap backup again. That's another $1.5M or so saved. This could simply come down to a choice between Letang at around $7M and Orpik at $3.75M if the cap doesn't rise enough. Orpik will be 33. Letang 27. Which would you rather have? Which is more easily replaced? Would Orpik take less to stay? Do they sign Letang and trade Orpik?

The year Martins contract expires he is 34 and will be 35 in the next season. I don't think they sign him again given the number of D-men coming up. If that's the case can they afford to not have Letang signed? It will be very interesting to see what Ray does here. If he keeps him what is the cap hit and who does that mean they can no longer afford?

The Pens have a few guys who have been quality complimentary players getting older...Kunitz, Dupuis, Martin, Orpik, Cooke. At some point they are going to have to replace these guys with younger players who make less. Defensively its easy to see where the replacements come from. Forward wise...not so easy. This off season and next will be very interesting to say the least.

We should be able to get a legit forward prospect, a solid 2nd pairing defenseman and a top 10 pick. Similar but slightly better deal than we got for Staal.

what would make anyone in their right mind suggest vokoun won't be here next year? he better be when fleury lapses into another playoff rut.

Ugh. I hate seeing this, only because the Jets would never do it. They can't keep big Buff. They already have Enstrom. I'm a huge Ladd fan, I think the guy leaves everything on the ice. Trouba is going to be awesome. Huge fan of his development in the US system. I would do that deal in a second, but I don't think the Jets ever would.

Letang for... wait, why are we trading Letang? :?:

2014 defense (@ $19m):

Letang-Despres
Martin-Dumoulin
Bortuzzo-Harrington

If Orpik will sign for @ $2m per to retire a Pen, he can be in there as well. Martin leaves the year after, and the cap goes up. Why the :scared: Letang :scared: ?

Letang will easily get that money on the market, probably more because he is vastly overrated by people that don't watch him nightly.

The Pens ought to move him for as much as they can get. They'll miss him a lot less than they would miss that 9 million he'll suck up on a cap hit.

The majority of people I've heard and read say that Letang is a really good offensive defenseman, with tremendous skating and passing ability. But, is prone to lapses in his own end and the occasional brain fart. How is that vastly overrating him?

I really can't see him trading him within the division.

But it does fit the Isles mission of building the best skating team possible with absolutely no defensive responsibility. Letang would wear the "A", and teach the young defensmen what it means to get 2 points per game (while giving up three).
