THere is not a scenario where the Pens keep everything. Its impossible to predict who could be kept, you can just look at the free agents and guess who the pens will choose to keep.

Congratulations to Evgeni and his family.

Thank-you Gene, didn't give me any time to worry that you would leave Pittsburgh :!:

Check out the number of players signed (6) and the current total cap usage for 2014-15:
http://www.capgeek.com/penguins/

If Letang wants $8M, he will be getting it elsewhere.

I was kind of hoping someone could give a scenerio using players that will be here in 2014/15, and then use an estimate of dollar amounts for the remaining positions, and an estimate of the overall cap. I know it's bit much to ask, but we have some pretty astute people here

The Pens have 6 players signed for 2014. The roster will look very different. I'm guessing we add Dupuis ($3m) Morrow ($2m) to that mix soon. Sutter will need a new contract. I kinda hope Kunitz gets traded for a younger guy. But there's no way this team as currently constructed can be kept in tact.

They have roughly $7.9 million to fill out the roster next year as is. I am guessing we will see Letang traded so that will go up to $11.4 million. We will have 5 d-men, 2 goalies, and 9 (not counting Big Mac) forwards signed. So roughly 7 players to sign with $11.4 or 6 players to sign with $7.9.

EDIT: sorry that's for next year.

I started it for someone. Not a lot of people signed beyond this upcoming season. $34.1 million spent

Despres and Sutter will be RFAs at that time, looking at significant raises from $0.84 million and $2.067 millionr respectively. Bortuzzo will be an RFA as well, looking at a more modest raise most likely.

Of course, they could always trade Neal to keep Letang (and revert to the helicopter approach). :pop:

so 6 players taking up 34 mil for 2014/15 and the globe/mail has the cap at $64.3 ( if you believe them), so we have roughly $30 mil to fill out a roster, yikes!!!!

1.) We will be spending less $$$ in goal.
2.) 2-3 defensemen will be on their 1st contract/entry deals.
3.) We forget about the bottom two lines and roll Crosby-Malkin every shift.
4.) Championship

I think we can all assume Letang is as good as gone now. There is no way you can fit him into the salary structure. The defense is going to look extremely different in 2 years.

The only players signed in 2014/15 are...

Evgeni Malkin (9.5 million)
Sidney Crosby (8.7 million)
Beau Bennett (900k)
Paul Martin (5 million)
Marc-Andre Fleury (5 million)

Simon Despres and Brandon Sutter will be RFAs.

$34.1 million tied up in those 5 players.

It's a fair contract for both sides. Why have the pissing match?

Fair deal. It's a discount and it's not a discount. Malkin makes less money over the 8 years of the deal than Crosby does over those same 8 years, but will be a UFA 3 years before. The cap number is $800k more per year than Crosby, but the Pens get cap relief sooner as well.

We don't know that he's the second highest paid player yet, just that he has the second highest cap hit. Big difference.

All the credit goes to Byslma, because if Byslma wasn't coaching the team then Malkin wouldn't of wanted to stay with the Pens.

Difference there is Datsyuk is 34, Zetterberg 32. Slightly different from Crosby's 25 & Malkin's 26.
