UFA Schedule Under the New CBA Question

Postby IanMoran on Tue Jun 25, 2013 12:46 pm

I thought I remembered the CBA stating that there would be a period from July 1 - July 4 that players were allowed to talk to teams, but couldn't sign anyone until free agency opened up on July 5. I thought this would end the "July 1 free agent madness" and free agency would become more similar to NBA.

I am now seeing NOTHING like what I stated above and apparently free agency just opens up this year on July 5 because SCF pushed back so far, and it will go back to July 1 in 2014.

Is there anything to my first paragraph or did I somehow just make that up in my head?

Thanks

They had talked about it but I believe it went by the way side.

It's July 5 this year due to everything being pushed back because of the lockout.

Does anyone have a list of players that are expected to be bought out this off-season?

This new UFA will do 2 things.

1, when the 5th rolls around the NHL live ticker will be non stop. (more excitement)
2. Now you got 3 days for teams to bid and out bid one another so some salaries will sky rocket.

Start of free agency remains July 1 for Years 2 through 10. (oObviously because of the late start, free agency will begin later this year.)
The NHL tried hard to move the start of free agency to July 10, wanting to move it away from the two national holidays -- July 1 in Canada, July 4 in the U.S. -- in order to give all those high-profile signings more buzz. Alas, the NHLPA hung tough on this one, wanting to keep it at July 1. It’s never been in the union’s interest to shorten the free-agent window for players trying to find jobs. Personally, I would have wanted to start free agency in late June. Guess I’ll have to wait another 10 years to get my way.

Free agency should start the day after the draft :)
