Scott Cullen (TSN) Sees Briere, Scuderi on Pens.

Postby TheHammer24 on Wed Jun 26, 2013 11:51 am

TSN did the Penguins in its Off Season Game Plan series, today.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=426344

He listed a "possible" roster for us:

http://capgeek.com/cap-calculator/roster/22857

FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.725m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Danny Briere ($2.500m)
Jussi Jokinen ($2.100m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) / James Neal ($5.000m)
Tyler Kennedy ($2.000m) / Brandon Sutter ($2.067m) / Beau Bennett ($0.900m)
Tanner Glass ($1.100m) / Joe Vitale ($0.550m) / Craig Adams ($0.750m)
Dustin Jeffrey ($0.688m) /

DEFENSEMEN
Brooks Orpik ($3.750m) / Paul Martin ($5.000m)
Rob Scuderi ($4.000m) / Matt Niskanen ($2.300m)
Simon Despres ($0.840m) / Deryk Engelland ($0.567m)
Brian Dumoulin ($0.900m) / Robert Bortuzzo ($0.578m)

GOALTENDERS
Tomas Vokoun ($2.000m)
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m)

Obvious speculation. Note Letang is gone, but there are no obvious return pieces on the team.

Really hard to speculate like this especially with having Letang out of the lineup and no replacement coming back...

I could see the Pens having interest in Briere and Scuderi but Letang needs to be resolved first...

Niskanen in the top-4 makes me want to vomit. I'll take pretty much everything else.

Where did Letang go? How does the puck move forward? Kennedy can't play on the left. Niskanen is not a top-4 defender.

I definitely see Jokinen in the top 6...he is too skilled and makes too much not to be utilized in that position...though that 2nd line looks a little defensively "meh" but could have (potentially) 3 30+ goal scorers on it...Briere is an enticing possibility, but I could see him making more than 2.5 mil. from someone even though he just got a nice paycheck.

I though Breire was a center? Makes sence with Duper gone we need a guy like that. I don't see us losing both Duper and Letang, it will be one or the other. I hope its Letang i soured on him during the playoffs.

Answers, in order.

The Phantom Zone.
Low friction of the ice coupled with kinetic energy of the puck transfered from a stick.

I also agree with both statements.

Briere can play center and grew up as a center, but his lacking size and poor defensive ability/effort has forced him to the wing. Can play his off-wing, especially on the power play.

@sil: Liked the answers very much. Thank you for clearing things up.

Just what we need another small, soft forward.

The only thing I'll say about Briere is he would be a Philly killer for the Pens. He's the kind of player that CAN show up when he wants and I think he would love to stick it to Philly.

For some reason, I see New Jersey taking a run at him though.

TSN has him rated higher than Orpik

Actually if Scuderi is back, "The Piece" would theoretically return. 8-)

.....why do this? He has Letang and Dupuis gone with nothing in return, at least give us a trade speculation, could've said draft picks or whatever, but without addressing what return you could get for those two this is kinda pointless.

I have no problem with Niskanen in my top 4 during the regular season, but he has been brutal in the playoffs.

I can see Briere signing with the Pens. He wants to stay close to his family who won't be moving.

Trib is reporting today that Shero is working to keep Dupuis and Cooke. I hope they both stay.

On Briere... one of the surprising things I've been reading all season on Flyers's two forums I look at is that he lost his speed. I haven't watched him play much this year, but there is a red flag for you. His scoring is down. I would rather keep Dupuis, even if we have to pay him a million bucks more than Briere. I am not saying I wouldn't take Briere, just not at the expense of Dupuis.

Oh, you guys now what will happen if we don't sign Cooke. Flyers will throw crazy money at him and he'll be playing against us next year.

Read the Letang thread. Many would believe it's better to get something for Letang rather than "to lose him for nothing" even if it meant missing the playoffs. It's maddening.

I don't think if we lose Letang we automatically go to missing the playoffs though. It all depends.

When this organization extended Bylsma and his "system" they put entertainment above having a team who can win in the playoffs. So enjoy the entertainment value #58 brings in his last season as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The reasoning deployed in the thread was you can't "lose Letang for nothing no matter what." So, yes, i think. Also, there were those arguing that keeping Parise even though it led the Devils to the Cup final was a bad idea.

I can speak only for myself, but if trading Letang meant the Penguins would miss the playoffs, I would be against it. I don't believe that will be the case -- not even close, actually. The Penguins surely will take a step backward losing Letang in a trade, but the hope is that they bring back at least one piece that helps to counter his departure. If that happens, and if Despres can step into a larger role, the Penguins could get similar production by committee, though no one player will fill his shoes or replace him.
