Kunitz Extension

Postby Hawkeynut on Thu Jun 27, 2013 8:22 am

TSNBobMcKenzie: PIT forward Chris Kunitz is on verge of signing a 3-year extension with Penguins. Total value likely in the $11M to $12M range. (3 seconds ago from Twitter for BlackBerry®)

That's about what I expected. Kunitz isn't a guy to move just for the sake of change - even though his playoff history is spotty. Nice deal.

Contract will not go in to effect until next season when the cap will probably go up.

What does this mean, if anything, for Dupuis? Why extend Kunitz, when he was still under contract? I imagine it is a raise right?

Seems like it will be the same with possibly a little raise if it's closer to the 12 million end. :thumb:

I don't think dupuis' fate hinged on signing anyone else. Either he'll accept the modest offer from shero, or he'll get overpaid by someone else.

Good deal. Excellent chemistry with Crosby. Team leader. Hard hitter. Talented offensively. I prefer the lower end of the projected range, but even if he gets $4 million per year, that's fair value for someone who means as much to this team as he does.

Kunitz can play well with both Sid and Geno.

Say what you want about it being easy to play with star players, but Kunitz is the only one I've seen come through the doors who has been exceptional with both. (Not a bunch of players to compare too but he slides right in and that line dominates)

The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms with forward Chris Kunitz on a three-year contract extension, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The deal begins with the 2014-15 season and runs through the 2016-17 campaign, and has an average annual value of $3.85 million.

A raise of .125 - Good stuff Ray and Chris :thumb:

Sweet, i would imagine this kinda sets the stage for Dupuis to sign a simular deal. like 3 yr 3.5.

I have seen alot of players get more for a lot less production. This is indeed a "hometown discount".

Now, get Duper into a 3 year $3m/yr deal and we can call our top 6 forwards... done.

:thumb: Agreed. Kunitz can function well with either Sid or Malkin and that has been indeed rare in Pittsburgh. Good extension IMO.

Very very happy to have him extended. By far one of my favorite players over the past few years. Can someone post the picture of Kunitz's face photoshopped over all the pens on the bench (and the ref for that matter) taunting a guy on the ice?

Maybe I'm pessimistic, but I see this as a sign that Dupuis is less likely to be back.

Good deal. The only possible negative I can see is an impact on Dupuis and Cooke negotiations, if Shero isn't willing to go 3 years with them like he just did for Kunitz.
