Question about players already bought out

Postby Steve Dave on Thu Jun 27, 2013 12:06 pm

Are they free to sign with any team right now or is there a grace period? Do teams have to wait until The start of free agency to offer them a contract?

Players that are bought out have to pass through waivers first, so a team that really wants the player could claim him but would have to honor the current contract. I doubt anyone will claim the bought out players but a team that has a lot of cap space could theorectically do it if they like the player and feel they won't be able to sign him as a FA.

They can't re-sign them for a year

The NHL also closed a loophole on a trade and buy out then resign. There were rumors Toronto would take people's bad contracts to get some picks and prospects or anything of value then buy them out and the other teams would then resign them to better deals.

Also, plpayers with NMC's can elect to not be waived and go straight to the buy out.

I thought Toronto fired Burke. That sounds like something he would do.

What I meant was the Flyers have bought out Briere. If Shero is interested in signing Briere, does he have to wait until July 5th?

How come NYR bought out Redden and he was able to sign with Boston?

Because that was done at the start of the season and players then are free to sign with whoever right away.

Well, he got signed by St. Louis first, and was then traded to Boston.
