Dea's description in that article sounds very similar to Erik Christensen... Don't know if its just me.

J.S. Dea and Connor Rankin were more highly thought of going into the year than coming out of him. Both can finish, not much else. Dea is a twig. Rankin was bigger than Dea when Rankin was 15 I felt...players to keep an eye on. Big thing with guys like this: speed of their release. Will shed some light on their future.

Now I'm rooting really hard for him to make the day. I don't even care if he can play.

Let's just call him "Atkins", then?

“Things have gotten so much better,” Fitzgerald said of the annual summer gathering. “When I was a rookie in 1988, I went to Islanders training camp. We had games against the Rangers and Devils rookies. Those were wars. Survival of the fittest. Put the foil on. It was scary. There were literally fights on every shift. Just scary stuff.”

Things are soff these days.

I'm most curious to get our first good look at our new goalies Hartzell and Jarry and then after that to see what another year of seasoning has done for Maatta and Pouliot.

Is there anybody among this group of forwards that has potential to turn some heads with a strong camp? Seems like a rather shallow pool on the surface.

The on-ice portion of camp starts today, shortly after 2pm. I will be there, passing on whatever happens to catch my eye at @LGP_netwolf (https://twitter.com/LGP_netwolf).

You should also be following @IanAltenbaugh & @H_P_Hockey for more camp observations. Both should be there everyday as well. I think @PensNation_Nick, @PensNation_Andy, & @jmarshfof will be there a couple days. Even though they're slackers, check them out too.

Among the forwards, I'm most interested to watch Teddy Blueger. His skill stuck out last year. Also curious to see how Kuhnhackl looks after basically losing all of last year to an injury.

As always, thanks for the dev camp info Ntewolf. Thrilled to see you get the props from the Pens to cover this and the pre-season!

I am visiting Montreal and have had some great chats with basically random hockey fans. I have been wearing my new Pens draft ball cap. I had one guy come up to me and tell me that T Jarry is not that great a goalie but Dea should be Habs property. Heat here is insane and I think it scrambled his brain, but regardless, there are some hardcore fans here in Montreal.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the appreciation. :fist: It's still a little weird to me that what started out as message board posting over a decade ago got me space of my own here (Thanks again, RJ!), and that somehow landed me part-time media passes...

IIRC, Dea attended Canadiens' camp a week or two ago. Maybe the guy you talked to didn't realize he was attending as an undrafted UFA, or really likes the kid and thinks Montreal should have signed him while he was there.

I'm not that great at picking up on the intricacies of goaltending, but Hartzell looked like the better guy today. That said, he probably should have, given how much further along in his development he is.

Any overage aspect at play in this camp?..I recall Tangradi being at one of these, when he really should have advanced past that stage.

Looks like 24 is the oldest according to the list Pens put out. Hartzell and Rowney (appears to be a ufa invite)

Looks to be a young group to me. Megna is only other Pens property above the age of 22.

I'm sure you meant more of years spent at these prospect camps and that I have no idea.

The camp will not solve the problem of Bylsma reluctance to put young players on the ice. Most likely Bylsma getting kicked to the curb as a tweener forward by better younger players has him now reluctant to do that to his own tweener forwards and defensemen.

I respect your comment, I truly do. I have seen so many people on this board with the exact same feeling toward Bylsma as this. But if you take a step back and look at this from a strictly common sense perspective. Do you really think that the coach of the Penguins would use his own "potential" bitterness at being pushed out of the league by better players, to impact the playing time of younger more talented players now? Don't you think that if Lemieux or Shero really felt that the coach was not able to make unemotional decisions regarding a team trying to win a cup, they would step in?

I think people are making these wide stretching assumptions about Bylsma and his hate for younger talented players, with really no credible evidence supporting it. By it, I mean that Bylsma is bitter about his playing career ending because of younger players pushing him out of the league. Where has that ever been proved accurate? Did I miss an interview with him talking about this??

Now him being outcoached is one thing

Just my opinion

Don't, it's Puck Drama, he's just some jackalope masquerading as a hockey fan...this camp isn't meant to "solve [a] problem" and to drag HCDB into it is just ax grinding 101...

At camp, I like watching the goalies. Can be boring ,, but I enjoy their lateral movments.

Netwolf, Tom Fitzgerald mentioned Adam Payerl or some believe , Fitzgerald would say Payerl is close to the NHL. Can you watch out for him? I drool over a wing at 6-3, 218!

For some reason I thought Payerl was older, like 24, 25. I guess because he went undrafted. The kid can hit, and would probably compete for a 4th line job this year, except that we've got Glass and Adams.

Although, with as good a season as Glass had, its possible Blsyma will move him up to 3rd line so a spot might be open there for Payerl.
