Crosby's and Malkin's contracts

Postby Steve Dave on Sun Aug 11, 2013 9:12 am

Do you think this is coincidence or planned?

Crosby signed a 12 yr, $104.4 million contract for an annual cap hit of $8.7 million.
In the past, Malkin was signed to the same contract as Crosby but the new CBA rules didn't allow for this.
Malkin signed a 8 yr, $76 million contract for an annual cap hit of $9.5 million.
If Malkin were to sign a 4 yr extension at the end of this contract for $28.4 million, it would be the same length and total $ of Crosby's current deal. Malkin's cap hit, however, would be $7.1 million.

So Crosby is $8.7
And Malkin, $7.1

Coincidence. The penguins would not say "hey, we can only sign you to this, but if you take it we'll sign you 4 more years at the age of 35 for 7.1 mill per."

Why would the contract be 4 years $28.4 million? I cant imagine the value of players plummeting that fast.

Didn't want to start a new thread about this, so I thought this would be a good place.

Don't know if people saw this but an article came out in Russia the other day with Geno's dad talking about the Stars making a bigger offer then the Pens. He also talks about how Geno's new deal wasn't as bang-bang as it was thought to be. Link below.

That article really paints the picture of Shero being a brilliant negotiator. It also paints a picture of Dallas being a bunch of morons. It also paints a picture of BS.

EDIT: I can't believe I was tricked into going to that website. I gotta make sure I get more sleep more often.

It's bull. As Geno was under contract until Jul 1 of NEXT YEAR, I fail to see how Dallas could have even spoken to Malkin without the threat of tampering. He signed his current deal as an RFA, then signed a new one a year before he would hit free agency. There is no way Dallas could offer Malkin anything - not even a tour of the city.

that is some real creative thinking on your part putting those sums together. And honestly I love the symbolism of the 8.7 and the 7.1. But think of where the cap maybe in 8 years... to many questions to think of your equation.

True, but he'll also be going on 37.

Malkin will be 34 when the time will come to sign the new contract.

Actually, we are both wrong. Malkin is currently 27. He will be 28 at the beginning of his 8 year deal he just signed. He will be 35 at the end of that deal in 2022, and will turn 36 prior to the start of the season if he were to sign a new deal. So technically, he would be 34 if he signs an extension a year early around the start of free agency but would be 36 before playing a game on a new contract.

Yes, which doesn't conflict what I just said. He will be 34 when he can sign his next contract.

I took it as you meant he'll be 34 when it kicks in, just stating he wouldn't be 36 until it did.
