Say, do we sign Kobasew or don't we? And do we wait right now because of cap issues?

Nothing spectacular is going to happen today. Bennett/Despres will go down. Then tomorrow, when Vokoun goes on IR, Bennett will at least come back.

I just knew that trades and signings can happen at any time of day or night. I thought if it is 2am and you finalize a trade that adds 1 extra player (2 for 1, or 1 for pick, etc) and you need to waive someone... how does that work

Well, there's a daily roster deadline, so to speak, and I think it's 5 pm (or like two hours before a game if you play in the afternoon...I'll have to check on that exactly) every day. If you're on the active roster at 5 pm (NY time) that day, then you are. If you aren't, you aren't. So if the player is acquired at 2 am, it won't factor into anything really until about noon NY time (which is when the ability to waive a player takes place).

It wouldn't be terribly hard to negotiate this out during the season with injuries and all that. Especially if it wasn't a game day. You could just send down a waiver exempt player (like a Beau Bennett) for one day, waive or otherwise remove another player from your active roster, have them clear noon the next day, recall your exempt player (Bennett) and be fine.

A lot of teams that find themselves in a situation to make a trade such as that, will only have 21 or 22 with them anyway. Or have guys that can be easily be sent down (such as a Zach Sill or some such).

I would guess we would wait until after 5 pm (NY time) today to sign Kobasew if we were going to. As I understand it, many teams are filing the "injured reserve form" today for their players before 5 pm to conform to roster limits as some teams are over (like New Jersey who has 25 on their active roster as of right now).

Harrison Ruopp getting called up slightly unexpected, but I think it may just be a numbers (either here or WBS) thing more than anything else.

He must report. Only players on ELC can be assigned to the ECHL without their consent, IIRC. But he must go there. I'm guessing he'll immediately be recalled and that Wheeling, WV is closer than Scranton, PA? A paper move? Not quite. But more or less, yes...

There's a way to manipulate LTIR cap space by moving some money around...it could be a case of that. It could be that they want Ruopp up...I'm not totally sure. But we wouldn't be the only team that's got our capologists hard at work right now...

The closer they start the season at the cap the better then all of Vokoun's salary can come of for LTIR, and Letang's too, then they can make more roster moves.

Correct, well, in meaning.

Ruopp's cap hit is $925,000. Which is more than both Beau and Despres.

How many salary cap days are in this regular season? The season runs 10/1 to 4/13, which is 195 days. But the olympic break runs 2/9-2/25 (17 days).

So does that mean the season is 178 days long? Or 195 days?

I'd assume if that 17 day period is included in the cap, teams would make some demotions on 2/9 to bank some extra cap space during the break? Unless there's a roster freeze

That may be why some GMs say they have more room than what capgeek figures. Shero, for one, said all summer that he wasn't as far over the cap as many had speculated. Counting on sending at least a couple of guys who are waiver exempt down for those two+ weeks.

There's more stuff you can do than on the surface. There's even a provision deep in the CBA for a player that allows for a player who makes $650,000 or less to not count given a set of circumstances...there's always some wiggle room, as we can see with our roster moves today.

So with Letang and Vokoun' situations are we officially in a position where we don't have to trade niskanen? Because he's a pretty good #5.

Nisky isn't a pretty good #5 when Letang is on the IR.

Shero made the right move holding onto Niskanen, especially given the Vokoun injury. I feel pretty good about him being on the third pairing, I don't think he is a top 4 guy at all.

I would prefere Despres over Niskanen, Despres seems to have a stronger defensive game.

Curious what happens when D'Agostini comes off LTIR (550k cap hit, only 310k cap space). I see a couple options:

1. Send Maatta back to juniors.
2. Trade Niskanen.
3. LTIR James Neal.
4. Waive Jeffrey

#3 is probably the most likely. Jeffrey will undoubtedly lose his roster spot to D'Agostini initially, but I don't see them getting rid of him, as they need a 13th forward. A lot will depend on the Maatta situation, which will need be resolved in 1 week... unless, can Maatta be scratched and not have games count towards his 9-game tryout?
