Pens make 2nd round of cuts, 3rd on Monday

Postby Penspal on Sun Sep 22, 2013 6:16 pm

From the official site, Pens send 8 packing.

" Nick Drazenovic, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, Steve MacIntyre, Jayson Megna and Adam Payerl, and defensemen Scott Harrington, Philip Samuelsson and Brendan Mikkelson.

Drazenovic, MacIntyre and Mikkelson have to clear waivers by noon on Mondaybefore they can report to WBS."

A couple of rock chewers, stud dmen to get some time in WBS, the rest.... eeesh. More cuts coming on Monday according to HCDB.

That's the one that surprised me the most as well. It is weird we have not seem him in a few more of the scrimmages...

Yeah, he's not in the lineup for today's game, so it does seem odd. Mayhaps he goes today though as HCDB did state more cuts today.

Him and Ruopp seem odd. Minor injuries maybe?

That seems like a good guess about the injuries. Has Ruopp played at all in the preseason? I've watched at least part of all of the games and don't remember seeing him out there.

As was stated in that article, having Big Mac there doesn't mean the crap is going to stop, it just means he's going to fight the heavyweight.

Big Mac ... Sad, I would have loved to see him pound on some toughies in the East. The Grit and sandpaper better start to appear with what we've got. Yes, I know Big Mac didn't play hardly any, but its like a country having nuclear capability, the threat of dressing him next game :) <--- sarcasm, but wish it were pravda

Having heavyweights and fighters doesn't deter.

Guys like Cooke, Carcillo, Rinaldo, and other "loose cannons" targeting the other teams best players with cheap hits is how you keep the other team from getting dirty and taking shots.

Your heavyweight fighting my heavyweight is a sideshow. If you start taking runs at Malkin and Sid, the only real "revenge" is to target the other teams star players with questionable hits. Enforcers don't do that.

Unless of course the "trend" of leaping from the bench and joining the on ice fray continues. Then I do hope the Pens dress a serious goon every 10th game.

Bobby Farnham sent down, solo. Maybe that's the one cut for the day?

- Likely something about him being injured delayed it a day?
- Botterill cap magic at work?
- Bizarre HCDB motivational trix?
- Clerical error by the super hot blond hired for her typing skillz?

12 games in 2012-13 with 6 pims and 1 game last year with 12 pims tells me no. 4 minors and a 10 minute misconduct?

And finally, Tommy K and Ruopp head down to WBS. Death by a thousand cuts.

Glass, Vitale, HarryZ, Kobasew, Jeffrey, Adams, D'Agostini.

Who stays and who goes? My guess is 5 of the 7 get to stay on the roster and 2 have to go?

Fast forward to game 1 of the season....

*Only room for 3 of them in the lineup each night
*There is room for 2 of them to sit in the press box
*That means two of these guys get cut/traded/sent to WBS.

I'd figure out a way to trade Adams but that isn't happening. D'Agostini hasn't shown anything.

Another year where our entire bottom 6 and depth at Forward is all like 5'11 195lbs.

Competition btw Engelland & Bortuzzo for #6 spot.
Bennett & Jokinen for Malkin's LW.
Kobesaw & Jeffrey for 3rd line wing. (D'Ag hurt, may get sent waived.)
Kobesaw, Glass, Jeffrey & Adams for 4th line. (Vitale sitting, but is in here as well.)

My guess for opening night roster:

Kunitz-Sid-Dupuis
Jokinen-Malkin-Neal
Kobesaw-Sutter-Bennett
Jeffrey-Vitale-Adams

Letang-Scuderi
Martin-Orpik
Niskanen-Bortuzzo

I could see that being the opening night line-up. Bennett definitely has the skill to be in the top-6, but with the way he's throwing hits, he could be a useful presence on the 3rd line as well.

It seems clear they're thinking really hard about giving Kobasew a contract, and while he hasn't been terrific, he's definitely outperformed D'Agostini and seems to fit a bottom-6 role better than D'Agostini.

Vitale could be the 13th forward and sub in on the 4th line depending on injuries and opponent. I'm not sure what Glass brings over guys like Zolniercyzk and Sill, who are fast and hit everything, but it seems like the Pens' management likes Glass.

I don't mind having Adams around for "veteran experience" (whatever that is and whatever good it's done), especially if he's out there with guys like Vitale and Zolniercyzk, who can make up for his lack of speed. Glass, Jeffrey, Adams seems like a pretty slow 4th line, but, again, they seem to like Glass and Adams.

Judging by this:

The guys in group B might be the ones on the outside looking in. Just how I interpreted it.
