I think Shero made a mistake resigning Adams. I put that on him. I don't think Adams brings anything more to the team then Vitale or Sill etc. His PK usefulness is overblown. I don't think he necessarily hurts the team, but I think there are better options in the minors to replace him with.

Glass... I just think he sucks. I find him utterly useless, and have no idea what the coaching staff sees in him. I Just don't. He's awful at everything he does.

I dont know, but he has been doing it since he has been here. They always have 14-15 vets with nhl experience even when they have guys that are nhl ready. This offseason is nothing new. Actually its really toned down this offseason.

Fair enough.

I think it goes back to Shero saying he wants to model the Pens after the Red Wings, in that they keep veterans around to make the younger guys really work for their time to get to the NHL. Look at guys like Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar, who have spent the better part of the last 3 or 4 years in Grand Rapids, getting called up only in case of injuries. They are guys who can probably contribute to Detroit's lineup better than, say, a guy like Patrick Eaves or Jordin Tootoo, but they only saw spot time. Even look at Corey Emmerton, who spent 4 years in Grand Rapids before he cracked Detroit's everyday lineup in 2011-2012. Then on defense, you have guys like Jon Ericsson, who spent the better part of 3 years in the A, even though he was probably a better option than Derek Meech or Brett Lebda or Brad Stuart.

It'll be interesting to see who gets the first call-up in case of the inevitable injury, though.

It's a reasonable way to run a contending team.

Bennett & Jokinen for Malkin's LW.
Kobesaw & Jeffrey for 3rd line wing. (D'Ag hurt, may get sent waived.)
Kobesaw, Glass, Jeffrey & Adams for 4th line. (Vitale sitting, but is in here as well.)

My guess for opening night roster:

Kunitz-Sid-Dupuis
Jokinen-Malkin-Neal
Kobesaw-Sutter-Bennett
Jeffrey-Vitale-Adams

Letang-Scuderi
Martin-Orpik
Niskanen-Bortuzzo

Such a huge mistake if they play Jokinen over Bennett on the 2nd line.

He is more than ready to be on the top 6.

I disagree. There is nothing wrong with using Bennett in the top 6, but especially given the chemistry Jokinen has shown so far with Malkin and Neal, that is the best lineup. Bennett's development won't be hurt by playing the 3rd line, and he will add to that unit some playmaking ability that it otherwise lacks. Either Jokinen or Bennett as the 3rd wheel on the Malkin line is a wash in my mind, either combo will work well. On the other hand I see Bennett contributing more to the 3rd line that Jokinen would.

I think we'll see Bennett on both lines, dependent on the situation.

We'll definitely see Jokinen there to start, IMO, but Bennett will surely get his time.

As Desert mentioned, Bennett has much more to add to the 3rd line than Jokinen does. As the lineup is currently constructed, he's definitely a better fit on Sutter's wing than Jussi Jokinen is. Both fit extremely well on Malkin's line, but Bennett is far and away the better option than Jokinen on Sutter's line.

Despite what he might say in the papers, Bennett on the RW is better than on the LW. If he's in the top 6, I'd rather him switch places with Dupuis, which will likely happen if not this year, then at some point down the line.

I'm saying glass, adams, hairy zees, sill, and everybody else is utterly useless. Jeffrey and Vitale are the only ones with redeeming qualities on the 4th line.

Craig Adams as a 4th liner makes more sense than Dustin Jeffrey. At least Adams knows how to grind and kill penalties. Jeffrey does virtually nothing in my book. Not a fan.

Thank you SM80. I really appreciate this post.

Just go compare around the league...teams have been putting superstars on the PK for years. It was a Luxury having Jordan Staal on the PK. The NHL is so deep, so talented now, you don't need a guy on your team "just for PKing". To be honest, the PK wasn't that great last year. How can a 36 year old out perform a younger, fringe player, who is still trying to make it?

I agree when people say, adams doesnt matter, 4th liner, 5 mins per night of 5v5 hockey... however in the playoffs...you need 4th liners to come up huge.

Another thing about this: GLASS - VITALE - ADAMS. I'm sorry, Adams and Glass are completely worthless in my opinion. This also makes Vitale worse. Give me ZOLLERNICK - VITALE - SILL. Younger, faster, 4th line. They can do everything Glass & Adams can and more.

Is Sill this years all star that has to toil in the AHL because the mean and nasty NHLers like Craig Adams and Tanner Glass are better players than him?

I was unaware Bylsma was the only one making roster decisions (not defending him, but I'm sure you guys will find a way to twist my words on that).

Pretty sure Shero has just as much, if not more, of a call as to who stays and who goes. He's the one that ultimately has to make the move.

I agree with you guys.. Jokinen and Bennett will swap spots on 2 and 3 line for sure during season and also I agree that BB is better fit with Sutter on 3rd line on RW,than JJ would be.
As 4th line is concerned I think they made a mistake sending Sill down.. 4th line should be faster, more energetic.. Line of Glass - Jeffrey - Adams surely isnt that! Line of Jeffrey - Vitale - Sill would be,but I also dont see Jeffrey as regular 4th liner.. If he bumps Kobasew from 3rd line to 4th,maybe he will stay, otherwise he could be traded I think, maybe soon as we have to get under the cap..

Shero get rid of Glass and Nisky is the odd man out because of SC also.. Nisky and TG for some AHL-er and pick to Islanders,Avalanche,Flames or Panthers :?:

Bennett's defensive point play is as good or better already than any other winger. He has a bright future ahead of him in the top 6 but right now it's a better fit for the 3rd line with him there and Jokinen on the 2nd.

I haven't seen much of preseason to know if sending Sill down is an atrocity or not.

Bennett will benefit playing a defensive role on his natural side in the long run. Jokinen is a great fit in the top 6. Imagine a totally well-rounded Bennett next to Sid in a season or two.
