I don't see how you can. If he can keep up this play, it would be really sad. Can you imagine how slow the game will look to him in the OHL if he gets sent down?

Unless they're in a repeating pattern of 0, 1, and 2. In which case Fleury will break all kinds of Penguin records.

I think he looks better and further along than Despres did last year.

Me too. I'll be upset if he goes if he keeps playing this well. But I understand the reality if the Cap.

Ideally Niskanen keeps playing well and we can get a good trade for him.

Couldn't we trade Engelland?

It would make Bortuzzo our 7th D which would suck for him but make our d a pretty solid 7.

Someone would have to want Engelland.

The Pens are able to keep Maatta without any sort of maneuvering under the cap. It's purely a roster spot decision.

For me, 13-16 mins in the NHL is better than 22-25 mins in the OHL for him at this point.

Yep. Pair him with Bortuzzo and just play him. He's an asset at this point and legitimately makes the blueline much better.

Well, for this year. But it burns a year off his entry level deal, making him more expensive sooner.

Indeed. But the Pens aren't a budget team. They spend to the cap and play to win. If Maatta is your best bet and it's more beneficial to his development that he plays here, then you play him here.

It seems like many are arguing that Maatta should be sent back to the OHL, because that's the predictable outcome. What *should* happen is another story, however.

Trade either Engelland or Niskanen and make room to Maatta. He's one of the best 6 guys right now, including when Letang comes back.

Given the age of some of the defensemen this team has, there is bound to be some injuries. I don't think keeping Maatta up will be a waste of a year for him. I don't think he would've gotten this chance if they didn't think he was close.

Question: if Maatta stays, is he eligible to go to WBS at any point in the season or is it NHL or bust?

Am I the first to mention that we've had three GDT's with like 10-15 pages only each? Seems awfully small...
