Also, Mikey, I'm fascinated by how this and you seemed to find those stats quickly. Could you find me a list of the top 5 or 10 point producers in their own last 82 games played for comparison? I tend to think almost no one will be over 100.

Adjustment will depend on peers, GPG, rule changes, etc.

For reference, since goals per game averages dropped below 6 per game in 1996-97 here are the best point seasons in sum:

Jagr (98-99): 127 points
Thornton (05-06)*: 125 points
Jagr (05-06)*: 123 points
Lemieux (96-97): 122 points
Jagr (00-01): 121 points
Crosby (06-07): 120 points

*- Due to the obscene amount of penalties called in 05-06, scoring actually was artificially inflated slightly above 6 per game. An anomalistic year.

I wouldn't have that much ease on that one, unfortunately. I invite you to play around this list and site. Here's a headstart on it (it's sorted by points for most from 2011-12 through 2013-14, so the handful games we've had so far this year + 48 games last year, but all of the previous year). http://www.hockey-reference.com/play-in ... _by=points

If you have questions about the usability of "Play Index" or H-R in general, please don't hesitate to ask, I'm quite familiar with the site. But you should be able to figure it out quite quickly, nothing too tricky about it.

Is there anyway to sort the list by multiple years? It seems stuck on years from 2012-2014 (even though it's not 2014 yet). Can it be sorted from 2010 or 2011 to 2014?

Go back up to "Player Season Finder". Should be in the light gray bar between the two darker ones.

Since 2009-2010, Crosby has 280 in 186, or 1.51 PPG.

Thanks guys. I had a little fun with the numbers and noticed Crosby around 1.6 points per game the last 4 years and Malkin next around 1.2. The difference between those two is about 25% better than the second best guy of this "era." In the late 80's to mid 90's era Lemieux/Gretzky had right around 2.0 points per game each, and the next best guy was yzerman with around 1.4 points per game or about 30% better than the next best guy. So it is fair to compare Sid's dominance to that of recent eras. Thanks again.

I feel like when you compare Sid's season to those in the past you almost have to eliminate anything associated with Gretzky because he was such a significant outlier....like when you scrap data in scientific research/data analysis...it puts Crosby's accomplishments in a slightly less skewed perspective.

150 to 160 would be about the equivalent to 200 in today's nhl.

Not having lived in that era, I can't possible imagine what scoring 200 points in a season was like. Being on pace to score 150 sounds exhausting enough.

Scoring over the whole season is an afterthought. I just want the whole season.

I think it might even be lower if you use goals per game then versus now.

And Wayne's 215 point season, he scored 52% more points than second highest scorer (Mario with 141). For Crosby to have the same kind of dominance, he'd have to score ~152 points assuming second place is around 100. I think Gretzky had more dominant season than this but I don't feel like checking.

Yeah, it would be nice to see what Sid could do w/o missing significant time for once.

Pens across the board. Well other than 2 spots. That's an assault on the league.

On another note, that is awesome to see Josh Harding at #2 in the GAA category. For a guy that has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis....my God man.

He is starting for Minnesota with Backstrom in the shelf. That makes it more impressive to me.

I'll say it... 150 points would be just as impressive as Gretzky's 200 + point season..

Taken from my fb status
In 1985 average NHL game had 8 goals. Last year had 5.44. Gretzky had his infamous 215 point season in 1985. Crosby is currently on pace for 174 points. Adjusted to scoring era in which Gretzky played in and Sid would be on pace for 256 points lol. Wow

Its a different game now

We accept old goalies still as good despite the fact their numbers would be horrid in today's nhl, but don't make the same adjustment for forwards

Makes no sense imo

It doesn't help that the league changed organically to a low scoring league and then the rules were contrived to up scoring. No one notices that it still hasn't reached the levels that were there when Gretzky was around, they just notice that rules were put in place to increase scoring when making this argument.
