I think it might even be lower if you use goals per game then versus now.

And Wayne's 215 point season, he scored 52% more points than second highest scorer (Mario with 141). For Crosby to have the same kind of dominance, he'd have to score ~152 points assuming second place is around 100. I think Gretzky had more dominant season than this but I don't feel like checking.

Neither did anyone else, that's why Gretsky had 215 points.

To average over 2 points per game (82 games = 164pts) in one season seems impossible. Its hard for a player to average 1 1/2 points per game (82 games = 123 pts)

Go for it Sid!!!

the last 160 was Mario - who did it in 70 games. I could see Sid getting there. I'd settle for 1.6ppg (131 points) as an exceptional season in today's game.

Anyone know who the last player was to have more goals than games played in a season? That 95-96 season of Mario was close but not quite - had 69 goals in 70 games. (His 92-93, the 160 in 60, had 69 goals in 60 games, a 1.15 clip - would be 94 goals in 82 games). I thought maybe Brett Hull or Mogilny or Teemu but Hull's 86 was in 90-91, and Mogilny's 76 was in 77 games, and Selanne was 76 in 84 games.

That year wasn't even close to Gretzky's best in terms of % above second highest scorer. There are a least a few years better, but I think his best would be 1987, scored 183 points, #2 had 108, difference of 69%.

His stats were just plain stupid....he outscored #2 by at least 65 points for 6 years in a row

That six year run from Gretzky (82-87) is really astounding. The fact Lemieux was able to lead the league in scoring just one year after the most dominent season in NHL history is also a heck of an accomplishment. Here are the stats for #1 and #2 in scoring from 1982-1987:

1982
212
147

1983
196
124

1984
205
126

1985
208
135

1986
213
141

1987
183
108

The next year, Lemieux broke through and won the scoring title over Gretzky 168 to 149. Over the course of that six year stretch, Gretzky averaged about 56% more than the second place finisher each year. I'd settle for Crosby playing a few full seasons in a row and let the chips fall were they may.

Its not the acoring leader i want to see as much as just a return of more goals per game acored. That is just me though, i know alot of people are happy with todays scoring pace. But a nice reward to more scoring would be the return of the scoring title winner getting 120+ points a season. Maybe the Rocket winner getting 60+ goals every year.

I think a really exceptional season in todays game would be the 140 point season. 143.5 would be a 1.75 point per game avg scoring pace. In todays game i think that would be Gretzky-esque.

I agree. It seems to me that teams often do not benefit from having more than a day or two off between games, particularly a team that is in the groove. When you’re playing well, you want to keep that momentum going.

Yeah but it's not likely to ever happen.

There are really no major changes to be made that could effect GPG without catastrophically changing the face of the game. Larger rinks? Not likely. The only spot one could make a case might be for the league to mandate referees call penalties as they occur, irregardless of which team has had how many PP (sort of like how the Olympics or World tournaments do. Where you can see one side have 12 PP and the other have 1 because that is how many penalties were actually committed.)

But for the players, the game is not the same as it was years ago. The intensity is so much higher. This is down to the money being so much greater. Just watch some of those 80s games and you can be shocked at the lack of intensity you see in the game. Particularly in the defensive end of things.

Teams today, even the worst ones, put vastly more effort into defensive effort/scheme/system. MOST players block shots, again something only a few guys did decades ago. All players relentlessly hack and slash at players all over the ice when they have the puck, making it increasingly difficult to get time/space in general. Players are more fit and therefore faster, stronger, bigger, better... making every game and individual battles hotly contested. Goalies all play some form of hybrid butterfly, which was unheard of until a Patrick Roy made it all the rage. This has greatly reduced the amount of goals scored simply because a large majority of goals are scored along the ice.

It just doesn't seem possible to go back to those times of higher scoring.

This ties nicely into the other thread about "not being into it this year...". I think the long layoffs between games definitely contributes to less focus/excitement by fans on the Pens. Having a meaningful game every 2/3 nights is a hockey fans fantasy world.
