Congrats to Olli! Really accomplished something against all odds earning a spot here.

Will something have to give on the roster when Neal comes back? Can't see the Pens carrying 8 dman for too long.

Yeah, I don't think this affects Bortuzzo much. More like Engelland and Niskanen (I think he sees the end of his Penguins career on the horizon this morning).

we can afford niskanen, so i think we keep niskanen. maatta/bortuzzo isn't a playoff pair that this team historically would feel comfortable with.

I don't think it affects Niskanen at all since Shero seems to have no interest in moving him. Even more so considering Niskanen has already said he hopes to sign a long-term extension with the Pens.

From the other thread (thanks tfrizz):
Orpik - Martin
Scuderi - Letang
Maatta - Niskanen
Bortuzzo
Engelland

I like that line-up. I suppose Bortuzzo and Maatta could swap depending on the opponent. I just wonder what the cap affects are with that group.

Keeping a 19 year old defenseman on the team isn't something I would have guessed this team was capable of. With a full 82 game regular season under their belts, I think they'd be fine in the playoffs.

So Blysma hates young guys but is ok with really young guys?

How do we fix this remedy?

Maybe he likes young players who demonstrate they can contribute at the NHL level (Maatta) versus over-hyped prospects (Tangradi) or players who seem to have a lack of commitment to getting better (Despres).

Obviously Maatta staying up is J. Martin's recommendation.

How do you know Bortuzzo and Maata are not a playoff pairing? Boston had a player Tori Krug who came up last year and did a great job Did anyone ever hear of him Hot about DeKeyser in Detroit Came right in and played very well People on these sites are too critical of players Sometimes you just have to throw them in the deep end of the pool and say "SWIM" I just don't understand all the GM jockey wannabees

I would not have called this at the outset of the season, but there's no way to deny how well Maatta has played. He did everything he needed to do, and then some, to work his way into the lineup. On a team that is championship caliber, you simply have to put your best players on the ice, even if it is slightly out of line with the long-term plans. I'm not worried about setting the entry level contract into motion a year earlier than anticipated, and i'm not worried about losing a year on the RFA clock. I want a shot at the Cup! This team needs to give itself the best chance to win this season, and it seems to me that having Maatta in the lineup gives the Pens a better chance. Either way, it's nice to have so many NHL level defensemen in the system.
