Wonder how long it takes Despres to request a trade. No question he's been dicked around by this coaching staff. Coach basically says you are a lock for top 4... Then gives up on you during training camp.

Yeah, but Simon Despres not being a top 4 right now is more on Simon Despres, his contract, and the GM (who chose to send him down) than it is on the coach.

He's not being "jerked around" by anyone, except maybe himself.

Or he got outplayed by Maatta, a 19 year old which changed many plans? The luxury of being able to send Despres down also plays into it.

Where do you put Despres on this team? Who cares what DB said, where do you put him?

You don't. He'll be a callup this year no doubt, but right now there's no room. Simple.

So Bylsma is the reason Simon Despres was not* waiver eligible?

Despres appears to be the "Tangradi" of defense.

Yes. Let's discuss the fact that Simon Despres didn't have to clear waivers (I realize I mis-typed that, hard to talk on the phone, study for an exam, and type at the same time).

Let's try that again:

Bylsma's fault Simon didn't have to clear waivers, right?

Re: #MaattaWatch

Postby MRandall25 on Thu Oct 24, 2013 9:36 pm

Yes, I believe that is part of the reason.

The other part being the fact that he hasn't improved since he came into the league. He's been scratched multiple times at the AHL level (yes, even last year, but I bet that's also Bylsma's fault, huh?), but why don't we ignore that because it's easier to blame Bylsma. He was jumped in the depth chart by a 19 year old, and possibly Dumoulin. He's been inconsistent his entire career. Don't you think it could be because he's just not that good? Can't be!

Get real.

And the top 4 comment is 2 fold. Bylsma and Shero see Despres as a top 4 d-man. But he needed to come out to camp and earn it. He didn't, and now he's in the AHL, and getting scratched every now and then.

That doesn't mean he won't be one in the future. That means he isn't one right now. He's 22. He's got his whole career ahead of him. Some players develop more slowly than others.

And SolidSnake is right, Despres is like the next Tangradi. Some people just won't let it go that he can't earn himself a roster spot.

Too bad they don't make Bylsma fat heads, huh M Randall?

I sure wish our coach knew how much this guy sucked, 5 months ago, before he told the world that he (Simon Despres) was a top 4 defense men next season! After all those healthy scratches lol

They should have a little kid section on this board. Like a day care. I'm just sayin'

You're not even reading what I'm typing at this point.

He was a healthy scratch in WBS during the lockout, which was the same reason why he was a healthy scratch at times last year. Saying he was a Top 4, while probably not the best thing to say, is supposed to motivate Despres to take his game to the next level and earn the spot.

Despres didn't earn the spot. He was sent down. I'm not really sure why you're having problems understanding that.

Who said he was a bust?

Clearly you're not reading a thing, if you think I'm saying he's a bust.

And with that, I'm out. Not going to waste my time when someone just ignores 95% of a post that explains the 5% the other person nitpicked.

You are comparing him to Tangradi. You are also saying he can't crack a roster. Tangradi, by all accounts, is a bust.

I'm still waiting to hear about there being no truth in my comments? You won't address it, no?

You mean the one where you said "the coach gave up on him in camp"?

Yeah, that one. I don't think I need to address it. It speaks for itself. There is 0 truth behind your statement. It's 100% conjecture.

OK, I lied. That was it. I'm done. Walking away.

No one said he was a bust. Why are you attacking another poster...one who happens to be debating you into the ground.

Who the hell cares what Bylsma said in the off season. Despres came to camp thinking he was a lock and then proceeded to play himself out of the line-up while a 19 year old came in and showed him how it is done.

I would suggest you stop your personal crusade against your fellow poster, or you may be playing your way out of the LGP lineup.

To be fair, Despres came into camp with pnemonia. If your going to say "he didn't earn it" in preseason, then you could say the same thing about Dumoulin, who also got leapfrogged by Maatta.

Spoiler:
Dumoulin was injured, for those playing along.

The 6-foot-4, 214-pound Despres had success in the NHL during his first two years as a pro. A plus-14 rating in 51 regular-season games is evidence of that. But the Penguins were up against the salary cap, and Despres was one of only two players in camp who did not need to clear waivers to be sent down, so out the door he went.

Penguins management did not tell him the move was strictly business, however.

“It's maybe one of the reasons,” Despres said. “There's probably more than one.”

The Penguins want to see more consistency from Despres. Not consistency of effort or even consistency of results. Consistency of focus.

Welcome to the program Simone. We are a team that expects playoffs and aspires to Stanley cups. So the coach said you were a top 4 defenseman? Guess what? Someone else showed up in camp and was better. Maybe you should have shown up to camp focused and prepared. Maybe now you should go to WBS, play hard, and get ready to make the best of your next chance when you get it. You'll get that chance this season, I guarantee it. When you do, take a page out of Maattas book and play so well they have no choice but to keep you. Otherwise, Mr Dumoulin and Mr Harrington are waiting.
