Anyone else notice they're less into this season?

Postby IanMoran on Sat Oct 19, 2013 4:18 pm

Not trying to be a Debbie downer, just curious if anyone else is noticing this? Pens have always been the team I followed the most, but idk what it is this season I find myself just not tuning into some games, not wasting my time on Internet looking up penguin related things, etc..

Maybe it's the fact the pirates were so exciting or that playoffs are a foregone conclusion for the pens... Idk

Anyone else experiencing the same?

Judging by the length of the GDTs this year I'd say you are not the only one.

I noticed. I think it's a mix of the bucs and the fact that we went from 48 to 82 games and it just seems unimportant right now

It'd be interesting to see the pens TV ratings this year

Yea, I did feel like games mattered so much more last season... It feels like no matter what, this teams going to have a high seed in the playoffs and all that matters is how db, Maf will respond then

At this point it's just collect as many points as you can while the standings start to shape up, but the stakes are just so low.

Today was the first good team we played this season.

As I've gotten older sports in general I started to care less and less about. I used to NEVER miss a game, even when we were god awful. Now if I miss a game, it's no big deal. Other priorities in life. Wife, house... other stuff to do. When I was single and living on my own and just out of college or what not, then it was all sports all the time. Now they are a welcome distraction. Especially a season as long as the NHL is, I mean things don't start to matter a whole lot until you get till the new year.

I'm 25 and have been pretty obsessed with sports. Maybe I'm starting to reach "that point"

My expectations are just more tempered. In recent years we've seen "March of the Penguins" turn into playoff shame, so I'm happy to follow it but know that regular season glory does not June silver make.

I'm enjoying it. It's a bit strange after last year's crazy ride to have a "normal" season again. I have to keep reminding myself that the Pens probably aren't going to win 75% of their games again. ;)

It's not worth worrying about the playoffs now and robbing yourself of the enjoyment of the journey to get there. Yeah, the team has a lot to prove come April and beyond, but it's a long way off.

The team is 7-1, I'd hate to see if they were 1-7 what IanMoran would be saying.

I'm definitely enjoying it, but I agree with Ian. We have our first child coming in less than four weeks, but that isn't necessarily it. I've been watching the games, but I think I've been spoiled by regular season success for sure. That being said, I watched every minute of the Vancouver game today and was on the edge of my seat the entire game.

I'm into it as much as ever, but judging by ticket prices on the secondary market, noise level at CEC, length of GDTs, and other tangental measures of interest confirm the OP's point.

I think this is a big part of it. Hard to get up for games in November when you're looking toward June.

My son is 2 and he's our first. After 2 years you have a routine down and you can almost set your watch to it most nights. Night games get DVRd and watched usually starting around 8-8:30. I'm home alone with him this weekend so today's game was watched during his nap. At his age he doesn't want to sit and watch a hockey game yet. He gets excited when it comes on and yells "HOCKEY!" but as with any excitement a 2 year old shows it's short lived and he wants to build something with blocks. So I avoid social media and LGP until I can watch the game. If it gets spoiled, no big deal.

With that said, as a fan I think it's 2 things. 1) Knowing the Olympic break is coming which means a 2+ week break, and 2) Just wanting to get back to the playoffs so they can prove this isn't just another flash in the pan.

I'm less into it. Partly because of how little the last 2 regular seasons have mattered. Part because I've realized that these guys are a lot more human than I thought, complete with a ton of warts. Part because we've seen just about every permutation of what can happen with these guys that it becomes less compelling.

I'm actually more interested in the trajectory of Crosby's season than the W/Ls in the regular season. :pop:

I am loving this season. I thought today's win was great. Last year was a little more intense because it was "Cup or Bust." This year we are a little bit boring, but that is what it takes to win (especially in the playoffs). Call me crazy, but I think this is going to be a special year, and last year will become "hey remember the time we made all the trades and got swept by Boston?"

I've missed about 4 Pens games since the 04 lockout prior to this season. DVR has been good to me. With that said...

This season I have missed 3 games alone. You are not alone.

I think things will be different if they gain some credibility in the post season again, or at the very least... not lose in such dramatic fashion. Pick your favorite tv series and watch the same season 5 times in a row. That's where we are lately.
