Sid told me #Pens players were sure Maatta belonged in NHL after “maybe four or five games. He’s so smart, so polished out there.”

It was pretty obvious to those of us watching on TV too.

If Maata progresses anywhere close to his pace over the first nine games, he will a great player. Bortuzzo has also made tremendous improvement this year. Then there are Doumelin, Depres, Samuelson and others at WB-S who will be pushing for spots on the big team. So to the question is, do you keep the experience (Orpik, Martin, Niskenin, Scuderi) or let the young talent (Maata, Bortuzzo, Doumelin) show itself?

GM want young talent, coach wants experience.

Vets: Letang, Scuderi and Martin will be kept. Orpik, Niskanen and Engelland are on shaky ground (keep wise).

Youth: Youth is always hard to call. If you get a deal offered like the Goligoski trade, you nearly MUST take it.

Orpik on shaky ground looks like a minority opinion.

I think all depends on whether they believe they can sign him next year. If it's a given he will sign he will stay. If it's a given he won't sign then he's gone. Fill in the %'s for scenarios in between those two extremes.

I meant that more depending on the potential deal. Shero just inked Letang and Scuderi so he is not going to move them for anything beyond an outrageous deal. Martin is playing well and I still think Shero wants to prove that signing was good since he dumped Michalek. The other vets have no real hold on the team. If a deal to help the Pens comes along I could see them gone rather easily.

Similar deal with he young guys, but their value to the team (and GM) is harder to judge. However, If a deal like the Goligoski one comes up, where you can get a potential top winger... I could see some movement in that area as well.

So, if the right deal comes up I could technically see any of them moved, but I think that only those three vets are relatively "safe" for both on and off ice reasons.

This seems incorrect. He might be gone after the season, but I don't see Shero trading him prior to a playoff run.

Being "shopped" and being "traded" are different. While Shero might not be calling around to see if anyone is interested in Orpik or Dumoulin or Harrington (examples)... if someone calls him I am sure that he will listen to the offer. If the offer helps the team, I am sure a deal can be made.

Extreme example; Shero could say in an interview that Orpik is not going anywhere. After said interview he goes back to his office and Edmonton calls offering two #1 picks for Orpik. He is probably gone. 30 minutes after he said he was not going anywhere... (if two #1 picks isn't enough for you then say Hall for Orpik).

Very few people on this team are actually "untouchable", very few.

I know it's just an example, but Hall would be the perfect fit here injury-wise.

Meh, Niskanen will do. Niskanen and Engelland. Ok, Niskanen, Engelland, and Despres.

Also, I don't see any reason Nisky or Despres are as good as gone right now, simply for the fact that there isn't a gaping hole in the lineup other than bottom six or backup goalie, neither of which would be anywhere near decent value for.

I would argue, as others have that the left wing (physical Kunitz-like player) on Malikn's line is a hole. Whether gaping or not, that is up for debate.

Glad to see RS realizes Olli Maatta is way too cool a name and he can't send him back. Now only if the gorilla would approve my previous name change request. I would be Z'MaattaU.

Yeah, there are potential options or better put scenarios this season that could see a handful of things happen. I think the offseason and salary cap increases are going to play a role.

If Matta continues to play well and (as an example) Harrington is ready to assume a 5 or 6 slot full time just due to our cap constraints and Martin, Letang, Scuds contracts there is no way Orpik is back at a decent salary. We will need to allocate our forwards.

Lots to digest moving forward. For this season I still assume if the Pens want a forward upgrade and think the cup is there for the taking it has to be Nisky based on our ability to fill his slot and cap constraints.

Agreed. He's going nowhere during the season. I do think he's a goner after the season, regardless. He has a big cap hit, he's not getting any younger, and several young defensemen are ready and waiting. My guess is that Shero has a plan to gradually replace Orpik and Martin over the next several offseasons. Letang is here for the long haul, so is Maatta, obviously.
