Once they got the lead at 3-2, it should have been defense first. Not attach first. That is a point in the game you make the other team take chances. That should have been chip it out and dump it in. Defense first did not happen. WHY is the question. Someone on the bench has to take the blame for that strategy

Wrong You make the other team take chances You have the lead You need to push when you are behind not ahead That is what good teams do This was not the middle of the second period This game was coming down the stretch just like killing a penalty. Defense first

Irresponsible bench. No discipline and even less accountability. Typical.
Nobody doubts the amount of talent on this club. However, I wish they wouldn't lay down and quit as often as they do.
Can't win 'em all boys but giving this one away just stinks (kind of smells like D.C.).

The PP was Brutal....
Zatkoff was ok, but in takes him a day and a half to get back to his skates once he's on the ice...
Megna sucks...
Letang sucked but he gets a pass since it was his first game...
Not sure why you break up Scuderi-Niskanen , they've been outstanding...
Malkin must be dying alive with Kobasew on his RW...

Actually got to go to the game while in Pittsburgh tonight.

Pens dominated 2 periods, minus not capitalizing on bad penalties by the isles.

3rd got out of control when Pens decided to sit back and try to just play the clear the zone game. Credit to the NYI who noticed this and turned their attack up. Heavier forechecking and pressing the play. The cards fell into place as soon as this happened.

Not sure what it is, but the islanders have us pretty well figured out. They know when to push the buttons. Doesn't always work, obviously, when they are severely outclassed in talent, but tonight it did.

Whoever said Megna sucked... He didn't play much and didn't really do anything noticeably wrong other than couldn't keep up when Crosby was on the ice with him, which caused an offsides. He wasn't good, but I've seen worse.

For now, Engelland is fine on the fourth line. At least he hits. His goal was actually better than it looked on TV because he was tied up with Martin starting at the face off. Martin was in his pocket the whole way until Engelland broke free to get to the net. I actually watched the sequence because I thought they were going to drop the gloves. Hustle play.

Sutter lost the guy on the NYI second goal. He lost his stick behind the net. When he went to get it and came back to pick up his guy, he was too late. He was noticeably angry bc he knew it was his guy, so I watched him on his next shift. I liked that he had an extra hop in his step the next time out to fight for the puck.

Zatkoff is over his head. He looked great through 50 minutes, but as soon as the goals started coming he was shaken and things went sideways. He played really well up to that point, but he looks awkward making saves. Not sure if it's nerves or that's just how he plays. Got really lucky on a 2 on 1 in the second. Was leaning really hard to the pass but the shot came right at his chest.

End random thoughts.

I think Zatkoff was scrambling/shaken because 2 of the 3 late goals were scored off of turnovers in our end in which the D failed to get back.

Yes, Maatta was out of position on that third Isles goal, but the real reason that goal happened was because of the horrible giveaway by Kobasew on the simple breakout pass.

And the team needs to find a reasonable backup for MAF. Zatkoff can't play in the NHL. He can make the first save fine, but he literally can't move side to side. His skating is so poor that it takes him several seconds to adjust after making the initial save. Can't have him there all season.

He doesn't fit on Malkins line at all. Once Neal returns, everyone will be playing where they should be.

He's a third liner at best being forced to play out of his level by injury.

The bad thing with Zatkoff is the Pens won't play confident in front of him. When Zatkoff is in nets it's not going to be an easy game to win. At the same time the Pens were due to hit a few bad spots. I will take this start to the season anytime. If the Pens win tomorrow, this game will be forgotten about.

Pens are ruining Kobasew by making him play out of his element. Everything about that second line looks awful. Geno doesn't like to shoot slappers anymore and can't get in sync with either linemate. He actually looks like he did right before the knee injury a couple years ago.

Zatkoff was ok,but man he really has to get up sooner.. last goal was because of that. He should be on his legs already.. But okey, nice save before that..
Letang nothing new,a bit rusty and bad in defense..
Kobasew should play on 3rd line, Jeffrey should get a shot on 2nd line for a few games.. It shows we miss 2 top 6 wingers..

I agree about the 2nd line. But geno's gotta step up. He's a superstar for Christ's sake.

I'm so tired of hearing about how his line mates aren't helping him out or picking him up. MALKIN should be the one doing that.

Malkin is frustrating as hell to watch and he's been terrible. People need to stop blaming his sucktitude on Chuck Kobesew.

And that poweplay of there's. How can it NOT be coaching? No team with that kinda talent should ever go stretches of 20 powerplays with not scoring.

Nope. He made the first save. That's all you can ask for from your goalie. After that, it's up to your D to get the puck out.

Was Bylsma responsible when the PP was over 30%

PP will look better when Neal returns and Bennett gets put on the second PP until.

Still...no reason why even a star-studded PP can't be effective my simply shooting more and keeping it simple.

Look at Washington's PP. Set up 1-timer for Ovechkin and everybody scrambles around the net for rebounds. There is no cross-ice forced passes or creative plays. No reason why the Pens can't run this. Letang, Sid, and Malkin don't have to each touch the puck 4 times per PP set.

You mean that tremendously large sample size? Lol.

Their power play has always been sub par in my opinion under Bylsma.

so one small sample size is acceptable, but another one isn't?

or are you referring to last year when their "sub par" pp was 2nd best in the league?

or the year before that when it was 5th best?

but yeah. 2 seasons of having a top 5 power play is way too small a sample size. we should all jump to conclusions about 2 games this season.
