Malkin's shot

Postby GenoSidStaalsy on Sat Nov 16, 2013 9:36 pm

When was the last time he wound up and took a slap shot from the half boards (or anywhere for that matter) like the ones he used to score on seemingly every other game. I think whenever he hurt his shoulder, he must have done permanent damage.

His shot is fine. He's choosing not to shoot it right now.

2 years ago when he led the league in points he also led the league in shots on goal with 339 in 75 games. 4.52 shots per game. This year he is at 2.65 shots per game.

His shooting percentage was also 14.7% compared to 5.7% this year.

He's not shooting enough and they aren't going in (obviously). His -8 is very concerning. If I was Bylsma I'd put Kunitz on his line for now since none of the lines are doing anything. Give Sid Dupuis and Bennett or Jokinen. They need to get at least one line going.

The Pens are too mature to *change up their lines in order to try and get a spark.* That's for teams who don't know what they're doing...

It's sad but true.

Changing Malkin's line won't make him shoot more. He still has to pull the trigger.

This is exactly why he needs a new linemate. He doesn't have enough space. Teams focus in on him because there's no one in front of the net. He skates around with the puck trying to find an opening. Now, it's been a year and half since he had a real LW, and it's becoming a bad habit. So now he's passing up shooting opportunties. Open up space for him and he'll shoot more. Get him a real LW and he'll have more space.

He passes it when he has enough space. He definitely has enough. He's passed up so many wide open opportunities to shoot it's hard to count.

This team needs to change up more than just Malkin's line. They have scored only 1 goal in 4 of their past 5 games and are clicking at 2.4 GPG since the start of the Boston series.

He'd have several if Letang could pass a one timer in Geno's wheelhouse. It seems like the only time that pass gets made is from Geno to Sid. Martin's not bad at it either.

I don't agree with this at all. He performed roughly the same with Steve ****ing Sullivan on his left wing as he has with Kunitz. The second or third best player in the league needs to produce regardless of external circumstances, and he hasn't for 4 out of the past 5 seasons.

Ever since the shoulder injury, Malkin hasn't shot the puck as often or as hard. I don't think that is even debatable.

Many times last year it looked like he knew his shot was at like 75% power or maybe it even caused him pain to shoot. He was going out of his way to avoid shooting and when he did it was often a weak attempt.

He's had plenty of time to recover though, I can't imagine this is still giving him issues.

He still wasn't shooting even before the shoulder injury.

Really? Is everyone that wasnt peak Ovechkin "not shooting"? Malkin led the league in shots in 11-12.

I'm talking last year, before his injury. He had his 50 goal season in 11-12, then followed it up with a pretty lackluster shooting performance last year.

His career average shooting % is 12.6. The year he had 50, it was at 14.7. Last year, it was at 9.1.

He was on pace for 262 shots last year, and while that's above average for his career, he was on pace was 77 less shots than he had when he scored 50. This year, he's on pace for 216, which will be his 2nd lowest total in his career (he had 182 in his injury-shortened 10-11 season). He's healthy this year. There should be no reason for him not to shoot more.

When he shoots the puck more, he scores. He hasn't been shooting the puck, relative to his career averages.

I'm not comparing him to anyone but himself. He has a great shot. He's not using it. He's passing up clear opportunities to shoot and either passing it to someone who doesn't have an angle or turning it over. I just want to see him use what he has.

That the assumption thatrather than a shoulder injury affected someone that they just suddenly lost their shot a month before said injury is a bizzare one.
