You want to see a mopey Geno? Get rid of Neal. Geno loves Lazy, and they play really well together much of the time. So no. I'll keep Neal, warts and all.

I wouldn't consider Neal a one dimensional player.

I do not think that Neal is one dementional. I definitely believe he is a good fore checker and back checker. He does have a penchant for having a short fuse however. And when he does retaliate he can do it in a sneaky, dirty way. But these things in the last two sentences can be made to disappear...see Matt Cooke.

You want a one dimensional Neal, try Chris Neil.

I guess we need to define what constitutes a "dimension" - in the traditional sense of what a "one-dimensional" player represents, James Neal is exactly that. He's just a sniper. That's it. There's nothing else of great value to his game...

Maybe he can coach with Dan Bylsma.

I'll take 1,000 players like Craig Ludwig or Ian Laperriere.

I want to watch a league full of Craig Ludwigs and Ian Laperrieres.

I notice he didn't call out Steve Yzerman for failing to reign in Sean Avery, but he couldn't help but call out Sid.

On the topic of
Get rid of Neal
the Penguins simply can't afford to do that because of the lack (read: complete absense) of forward depth. There are a plethora of 3rd or 4th liners available in WBS, but Neal is one of only two legit top 6 wingers in the entire organization.

You act as if that is the only reason why they are holding on to Neal. That's not the case at all.

Of course it isn't. They're holding onto to him because he's a star winger, 40 goal scorer, and point-per-game player. But even if they wanted to get rid of him because of his stupidity, they couldn't - at least not without trying to bring in a new scoring winger, which isn't the easiest task.

i agree with stewart's sentiment, but there's some cherry picking in that piece that's just silly.

first of all...despite what's in their rulebook or whatever, the NHL doesn't suspend people for diving. they aren't making an exception for neal, it's just something they don't do for anyone. and the way this is written, you'd think neal was the worst offender in the league - which isn't true. not even a little. no reason to bring that whole topic into this discussion.

secondly, i've been critical of crosby's leadership. not only does he captain a team that consistently loses its mind, but he's also an active member of the circus. BUT...you can't single him out the way stewart is here. by his logic, chara is also a turd of a captain because he can't keep marchand under control. same with giroux. and whoever the captain of the rangers was during the avery era. and probably a dozen other guys around the league who are generally revered for their leadership.

neal is a scumbag. there's plenty of evidence. no need to get silly to try to make that point.

If he's going to play the role of the dumb guy, I would like for him to not go 7 games without a goal (as he recently did). He obviously changed that on Saturday, but he needs to be more consistent.

Singling Crosby out is completely unfair to him. The lack of accountability within the organization goes right to the top. You can't expect the captain to hold his teammates accountable for their actions then the coach & management don't.

And this isn't something new. That mess of a series against the Flyers two years ago was the epitome of a coach who can't control his players.

Actually, it's been the other way around this season.

Neal w/o Malkin - 9 GP, 5 G, 9 A, 14 P (1.56 P/GP)
Neal w/ Malkin - 39 GP, 18 G, 20 A, 38 P (0.97 P/GP)

Malkin w/o Neal - 21 GP, 5 G, 13 A, 18 P (0.86 P/GP)
Malkin w/ Neal - 39 GP, 18 G, 36 A, 54 P (1.38 P/GP)

when malkin has been out, advanced metrics indicate that neal has played with a steaming pile of garbage.

there's no good evidence to say what neal would do with a non-elite, but still legitimate center.

But Neal played with Crosby when Malkin was out, so the only thing you're stat says in this regard is Crosby is better than Malkin :pop:
