Actually, it's been the other way around this season.

Neal w/o Malkin - 9 GP, 5 G, 9 A, 14 P (1.56 P/GP)
Neal w/ Malkin - 39 GP, 18 G, 20 A, 38 P (0.97 P/GP)

Malkin w/o Neal - 21 GP, 5 G, 13 A, 18 P (0.86 P/GP)
Malkin w/ Neal - 39 GP, 18 G, 36 A, 54 P (1.38 P/GP)

But Neal played with Crosby when Malkin was out, so the only thing you're stat says in this regard is Crosby is better than Malkin :pop:

That'd be true if Neal actually played with Crosby, but I you recall Bylsma opted to keep Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis/Gibbons together and went with Conner-Jokinen-Neal. It resulted in a lot of complaining on here.

Malkin was injured 12/14. James Neal was still serving his suspension. When Neal returned against the Wild, Brian Gibbons was not in the lineup. Pascal Dupuis was still healthy at that point. It wasn't until after the Ottawa game that James Neal was put on Crosby's line (which was 3 games after his return from suspension).

The first game after the Dupuis injury was Carolina. James Neal played on Crosby's wing (assisted on Crosby's goal). Then Neal had the hat trick against the Blue Jackets, playing on Crosby's wing.

Brian Gibbons wasn't even on the team at that point, because Dupuis was still healthy. Even when Dupuis went down, Gibbons was not on Crosby's line after his call-up. James Neal was.

Nearly all of Neal's points after Malkin went out were on Crosby's line, with the exception of two assists in the Minnesota and Calgary games (one of which was an assist on the PP).

shmenguin wrote:i agree with stewart's sentiment, but there's some cherry picking in that piece that's just silly.

first of all...despite what's in their rulebook or whatever, the NHL doesn't suspend people for diving. they aren't making an exception for neal, it's just something they don't do for anyone. and the way this is written, you'd think neal was the worst offender in the league - which isn't true. not even a little. no reason to bring that whole topic into this discussion.

secondly, i've been critical of crosby's leadership. not only does he captain a team that consistently loses its mind, but he's also an active member of the circus. BUT...you can't single him out the way stewart is here. by his logic, chara is also a turd of a captain because he can't keep marchand under control. same with giroux. and whoever the captain of the rangers was during the avery era. and probably a dozen other guys around the league who are generally revered for their leadership.

neal is a scumbag. there's plenty of evidence. no need to get silly to try to make that point.

Singling Crosby out is completely unfair to him. The lack of accountability within the organization goes right to the top. You can't expect the captain to hold his teammates accountable for their actions then the coach & management don't.

And this isn't something new. That mess of a series against the Flyers two years ago was the epitome of a coach who can't control his players.

It's Eklund's site. Stewart didn't have to mention Sid and only Sid. One could argue he's pandering to Flyers fans, who likely represent the largest segment of the fan population reading the site. You could even say he threw in the mention that he went to Penn in there for good measure.

Nealkerovsky scores 40 goals, who cares if he is an embarrassment? He represents the spirit of the burgh, dirty, short tempered and a diver. Heck yinzers don't care how horrible are athletes act (just look at Ben). We don't want role models - we want winners.

I'm not saying Neal is a saint; in fact, he gets on my nerves. But we've got a little army beating the same drum and most have spent the winter near Valley Forge. I know Hockey Writers are good (I enjoy Mike Colligan's stuff), but really...

this thread baffles me. are we seriously discussing not wanting a 40g scoring pure sniper who costs $5m a year? really?

i suppose it's because we have discussed the actual legitimate issues we have to death.

No protest; Neal's a total PITA. I don't mind it too much--in fact, I love the guy (it's complicated)--except when he gets on my nerves--and he does at times.

But let's not pretend that the groundswell of the movement isn't based right here in SE PA. Kick Neal Out of the League and 2012 Forever! have taken over from Crosby Sucks as causes célèbres around here.
