Magic Number Thread (Playoffs 2014)

Postby It'sagreatdayforhockey! on Fri Jan 17, 2014 12:36 pm

With the penguins hot start this season (and the not so hot start from many in the Metro division), the magic number is surprisingly low already.

Plus it seems fitting that in an Olympic year the magic number thread starts out at 50.

*Playoff magic number requires the Pens to finish in the top 3 of the Metro or top 8 in the east (with max of 5 coming from the Atlantic)*

Current Max Points:
Boston 132
Tampa 129
Montreal 127

Washington 122
Philly 121
Columbus 120

Detroit 120
(120 Points required to make playoffs)
--------
Toronto 119
Ottawa 119
NY Rangers 119
Carolina 119

Max points for Buffalo is 104, so it's 35 points to start eliminating anyone.

Division is 53 (Washington max is 122). Top 3 in divison is 51.

Too early? Yes maybe. Worse than the above list, is max points 117 NJ, 113 FLA and 111 NYI.

Hey GreatDay, you must be reading my mind. I was just thinking this AM when a magic number thread might go up. Thanks. :fist:

At this rate they might have clinched the division before he'd get to that 15-20 games left point...

Nope, don't worry I checked, a penguin has worn every jersey # up to 53 so we are good. :D

Oh, you meant too early in the season? Well you should have talked to the teams in the east and told them to not be terrible because it looks pretty embarrassing at this point for the majority of the eastern conference. We could be getting close to typical points required for playoffs (90-95pts) going into the Olympic break and with more than a month worth of games left in the season.

So the number to get is the lesser of possible points for clinching 3rd in the Metro or 8th in the conference now?

Pretty much, though it is conceiveable that the top 3 of the division could be less than the 2nd wildcard number of points.

Yep. It now requires three numbers instead of just one. Min # for top 3 in division, Min # for top 8 in conference and Min # for top 5 in division.

Maximum Points for playoffs (~ to get MN) will be the lower of these 2 choices...

1) Top 3 in division (currently pens need 117)

2) Higher # between these other 2:
a. Top 8 in conference (currently 117)
b. Top 5 in division (currently 116)

or

Min (1, Max (a,b))

This is nuts. It's still January and they only need to go 19-9 to make the playoffs, and that's if everybody else defies mathematics and wins out

Also defies reality as those teams will play each other many many times.

8.5 win lead in the division even in games will do that. Appears they now control their own destiny for the President's Trophy -- they are 3 and 2 points back of Anaheim and Chicago, with two games in hand on both.

NBCSN noted during the broadcast of the Sabres game last night that this Pittsburgh team is the fastest team to 40 wins in franchise history. Seems amazing to me because it doesn't feel particulary historic. Probably because they've won so much in the regular season the last few years, and when they lose they really seem to lose big.
