Might be time to give Crosby a night off

Postby MarioLives on Tue Feb 04, 2014 8:14 am

The man has played every game and is about to go play in the Olympics. He looks a bit tired, maybe a night off would help?

Has a coach never given a guy a night off before? Is it that crazy?

Yes, he looked really tired driving to the net, getting a shot on goal, and shoving a Senator over the goalie and into the net. Give that man a night off.

Maybe give him some "maitnence" days during practices to keep him fresh, but you don't healthy scratch Sidney Crosby

I did read an article somewhere in which the reporter talked to (I think) Hitchcock and Quenneville about how they plan to handle their stars, the Olympics, the compressed schedule, and being fresh for the playoffs and both said they are strongly considering giving their Olympic players nights off down the stretch.

So, it's not a completely crazy idea.

I think Bylsma would recommend Crosby sitting out the Olympics.

Is that why he's playing Crosby approximately a billion minutes a game? He wants Sid nice and worn out for Sochi.

We know Sid has pitt-bull qualities and getting the puck away from him used to be rare. AT the game, last night it was too easy .

While I disagreed, I don't think it's a crazy idea at all (just feel this can usually be accomplished through practices off). Hopefully the pens will have some meaningless games at end of season as well

NBA teams do this all the time. Miami Heat, SA Spurs, etc.... Too many games in a week/month or too many minutes logged down the stretch heading into the playoffs. Obviously, NFL teams do this as well in week 16 if their game is meaningless.

If we still have a huge lead then giving guys a rest down the stretch once in a blue moon should be considered. Absolutely.

I wouldn't want to be the coach telling Sid he is sitting for a game....Pretty sure DB is not that coach either...

As said above. Give him a few practice days off. Maintenance days as they say...

Sid's not used to playing a full season with all the injury issues he's had. To play all 82 + Olympics will be a big jump for him in terms of games played and minutes logged. I expect him to look a bit tired and worn down at times.

To me, he's looked very frustrated in long stretches of recent games. He turned it on in the 3rd period last night, but in the first period, he had a pouty look to him. Like penny said, there were times that he just didn't have his usual level of battle. It reminded me of the ECF series with guys like Marchand getting in his head and Sid "shutting down" at times and not playing his best. I don't think it really has anything to do with being tired.

I don't think scratching Sidney Crosby is ever going to happen; not necessarily because you don't scratch the best player in the league when healthy, but because he would probably have some choice words for HCDB... as would everyone.
