Game 58 vs Rags - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Sat Feb 08, 2014 10:03 am

Pens lose 4-3 (Shootout)

- Rangers played a smart game, took advantage of their chances
- Pens in a bit of a funk (maybe the Letang news?), woke up late & worked to get a point
- Lunqvist > MAF in shootout, strange but true
- Malkin is playing fantastic hockey right now, Russian Olympic team will be fun to watch
- Kunitz is fine tuning his playoff game, that slash on Lundquvist could have gotten ugly :fist:
- PK had a couple of really good kills, but Rags were 2/5 on PPlay, it was the difference
- Long Olympic break will Bring Back Beau to the Burghbirds, looking forward to seeing the silky skills
- Pens re-assign Gibby, Megna and the Flying Zolnierczyk to WBS, no rest for the wicked....
- Healing Mojo to the Pens....time to put on the Olympic gear!!!!

Has to be said, Maatta is making the case that he could be the best d-man on this squad by the end of the season. His progression in the past 2 months has been amazing. Time to let these aging guys take a walk and see what the rest of our youth could give us.

Also noted that Neal was really getting his shots on net. Nice to see.

I think MAF was feeling the effects of learning one of his best buds had a stroke. He just looked off all night.

In fact, given the news they all just learned and coming off a long road trip, I'm surprised they were able to earn a point. I'm not beating them up over this loss.

The rangers have been playing well lately and they barely beat us

When you factor in everything letang news, Olympic players starting to think about Sochi, non Olympic players thinking about their break coming up I figure this wasn't going to be a well executed game.

- Agreed on Maata comments. What a stud for being 19. Awesome game last night. The pinch play late in the third to maintain possession then cross ice pass to open area with Neal flying in for the goal was awesome, and the announcers on NBC gave him his due props. He had confidence with the puck last night, has good mobility and passing skills... just feel so much more confident with him with the puck right now than Orpik or Scuds.
- Geno and Neal chemistry is awesome. You can just see they both love playing together. Whether it was the tick tack toe passing between them on the Geno power play goal last night, or their nifty drop passes and puck possession during the 4 on 4 overtime... when both guys are healthy, we're lucky to see them as teammates.
- Anybody else feel accepting of the 1 point this morning? Like previous post... seems like we were off our game a bit last night, and Rags were "firing on all cylinders" most of the game, as the NBC announcers put it. It was a bummer to see Jussi and Sid miss, and then Flower give up back to back goals in the shootout for the loss... but seems like it was just the Rags night unfortunately.

- I'm going to give the Rangers props - but they got two of the luckiest goals you will see off of the back boards, and our defense and Fleury are the worst in the league on plays from below the goal line. The only line that had any consistent chances was Poulliot and Nash on wings - and their size was clearly an issue. Zucarello is easy to dislike, but he is slick
- I wonder how other GMs view Orpik now, because I see a guy who is often outmuscled all over the D zone by big forwards.
- The Letang news could have been some factor, and who could blame them
- I said to my brother last night that it is amazing that when there is a break or a one on one, and I look quickly at which Penguin Dman is back to see #3, I am more comfortable with that scenario that any other Dman except perhaps Martin.

He was last night, but that was the first time MAF has been scored on in a shootout all season and he only gave up 2 SO goals last season, too.

After the win in Buffalo, I read a PG a quote that 40 wins by the olympic break was the goal. LIght bulb came on that the nyr may not be the most competitive. ;) Coupled with hearing the news of K Letang and 1 skate out of pgh for vacaton getting a point - a bonus.
It was the first time in five games, the nyr won in Pittsburgh. Rick Nash skating the best I've seen him in years.
Brooks Orpik with 2 good D moves in OT.
Evgeni Malkin donning his Sergei Federov brain; playing all ends of the ice with swooping moves. His shot and give-go with Neal; pretty.

Non olympian penguins- rest, relax, and bring the sun & warmth back to Pittsburgh.
Olympian penguins~ be fabulous! Remember you only belong to the world for a couple weeks.

The Rangers lost to the Oilers at home the night before and played like they had something to prove. Despite that, the Pens managed to get a point when they realistically were outplayed for the majority of the game. Not MAF's best SO for sure. Sid can be frustrating to watch in SOs because he often looks for an opening and just shoots... so it doesn't look very exciting when he does score, and often looks weak when he does not. Best part of the game was seeing Olli step up and make the big plays on the first 2 goals for sure.

There's really not much to comment on...

The Rangers wanted it more and the Penguins sat back most of the game and relied on the big guns to come through...but at least that's not something that happen very frequently with this team

-Team showed some resilience in eking out a point despite being outplayed for most of the game

-Atrocious and pathetic performance by the older d men. They act like hitting is beneath them. Opposing forwards have absolutely no reason to have any fear near the Pens net. None. Martin and Scuderi absolutely will not touch anyone. Scuderi was femininely weak in allowing Pouliot to stab in the first goal. On the 3rd Rags goal, Scuderi and Martin were both just floating around the slot not actually defending anyone. Both looked confused, neither could identify or pick up an opposing forward. Martin took a pathetic little swat at Zuccarelo, i believe, and there is Pouliot, standing on the door step all alone for another tap in.

-Even worse, Martin, Scuderi and Orpik show absolutely zero passion or desire to compete and the coaching staff refuses to hold them accountable. These guys have made their money and their time is past. Who is going to listen next time Scuderi pipes up with a globetrotter reference or criticism? Time for someone in that room to step up and call out the old guys. Unfortunately this won't resonate until early (exit) this spring.

-I don't put this out there lightly, but Scuderi and Martin earned this one; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agL3NHgb8Rk

-RS had remarked that letting Scuderi get away to LA was one of his mistakes. Looks like resigning him could turn out to be a bigger one.

-As lacking as the Pens bottom 6 is, this team is going nowhere in the playoffs with the trio of old gentleman in the top 4. Playoff ferocity will eat em up.

The fact that they called him up a few days ago knowing he would be exposed to waivers at the start of the Olympic break suggests either they wanted to get rid of him or they don't consider him much of an asset.

I chalked this game up to a bunch of Olympians just trying not to get hurt out there one game away from representing their countries.

Not to mention that, as llipgh mentioned, the Pens definitely had something else on their mind (Letang).

He played in games #10 and #11 on this most recent call-up, which meant he was no longer waiver exempt.

These games should end in a tie, to look at it like we lost doesn't fit how good of a game it was. The thing they call a shootout should not be in the sport. Fine for the Olympics not for this league.
