Staal is still the better player, and will continue to be. That said, I heart Sutter and what he does for this team. He's a full 200-ft hardworking player.

Sutter's a great value. I hope Ray can work a deal, so that continues.

I feel like Sutter fits the team better than Staal did, especially since Staal seemed to want to be more of an offensive player than he was his first few years. That said, the collective Bottom-6 is brutal, but I like Sutter as an individual if that makes sense.

Still wish Jordan the best, but him moving was better for him and us. (Assuming he didn't want to be a 3rd liner & PKer for the prime of his career.)

I don't know how long an ice rink is. I'm assuming 400 feet.

Most NHL rinks are 200 feet long and 85 feet wide with 11 feet between the end boards and the goal line. The Olympic-sized rinks in Sochi are 210 feet long and 98 feet wide with the goal lines 13 feet from the end boards.

Yes. I was being snarky. I figure that's just assumed.

If Sutter is a 200 foot player, then almost everyone is. I've come to accept what he is, and even appreciate it to an extent. But there are some exagerations about his game that still bother me.

I guess at this point you have to look at it as, either we would have Jordan as our 3rd line center and no Kris Letang or status quo.

I will take status quo.

Hmmm. Staal has outscored Sutter by 20 points. Similar D. We still have Dumo and Pouliot

I think Staal, and the team, would have been better served moving permanently to Malkin's LW. I think we still win the cup... and then beat Montreal the year after.

I never understood why Staalkin was broken up.

'09 seems like empirical evidence that it was the right strategy.

He didn't play in the games that cost us our season. Nothing much to learn from that.

Wow that's not a bad way to look at it, I guess this might be what we would see today.

Staal- Malkin -Jokenin
Neal - Crosby- Kunitz

Top 6 problem solved but our 3rd and 4th line would be a lot weaker.

Subtract Letang from the defense since we couldn't afford him.

Sutter's the ultimate coach's player. On the most recent In the Room, you can hear the guys (even Sid) asking him for tactical advice, where to be, etc.

I get the impression that he's a player who is always thinking the game above his actual ability; kind of the opposite of Neal.

Yeah I mean who knows what would have happened in his development if he wasn't pidgeon-holed into a defensive role. He obviously has some good offensive tools, and believes he can be a difference maker offensively.

Playing the what if game again. I just find it strange that this team that has longed for top 6 wingers for years, had a guy who scored 29 goals in that role as a rookie, had obvious chemistry with Malkin, and could have used his defensive assets as the defensive player on 71's wing, never played there again. They won a cup with him as a 3rd line center, and therefor he was forever forced into to being a 3rd line center. (Though he still played lots in the top 6 because of injuries to 87 & 71).

His development kinda stalled here. I wonder if we're not doing the same thing with Sutter (not that he's top 6 material). Though Blysma seems to be giving him more of a green light with the puck, and the organization seems to want a more offensive 3rd line, so hopefully they're learning.

I'd argue Sutter's development stalled in Carolina, which is why they were willing to give him up.

I remember reading an interview he did where he said they never really gave him a chance to be an offensive player in Carolina. They didn't give him much PP time after his 2nd year and his ice time suffered because of it.
