Game 76 vs Canes - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Wed Apr 02, 2014 10:28 am

Pens lose 4-1

- Decent start, but that's about it. Carolina picked up their game, Pens had no answer
- Individual mistakes in the dzone will result in goals (Nisky, Engy were two)
- Some guys must be saving themselves for the playoffs, effort/hits simply not there
- Carolina's D is not that great, HCDB interviewed after period 1 -accurately pointed out what Pens were not doing, still didn't happen
- Sutter is lucky he didn't mess himself up seriously on that accidental stick stuck selfspear. Pens cannot afford to lose him!
- Canes have some decent talent, and when allowed to freewheel, they are going to win some games
- Pens are not using/playing with enough speed, or toughness (taking hits, giving hits) Hits need to be from minute 1 to minute 60

honestly though, the pens hadn't played a real dud of a game in a short while. just because we lost close games to LAK and STL doesn't mean we played terrible in them...what we saw last night was 100% terrible.

Positives
- Sid got his 100th point.
- Another game for Bennett to get in game shape
- Another game for HCDB to realize that C'fnA needs a rest

Negatives
- I'm sure that you guys can fill in the blanks.

I hope they have a LT development plan for Despres that isn't spelled "nachos."

Megna looked fantastic. I think Taylor pyatt's place on the 3rd line is even more puzzling than Adams' place in the lineup. And that's saying something.

To borrow a phrase from the Emperor Chaz, I think Craig Adams needs to get on with his life's work.

Feel bad for Megna due to linemates.
Sucks that Fleury, again, didn't have a team show up to help him. Goal 1 is all him though...

Probably a turning point there, if he buries that one (or if Sutter could have potted that rebound, which was as close to a gimmie as you'll ever see). The stars can't do it every game.

I fell asleep towards the end of the 2nd period and woke up after it was 1-4 in the 3rd. Pens showed as much energy as I had.

This is one of those games where you just can't point to anything/anyone specifically. They were badly outplayed, period. Malkin wouldn't have changed that outcome.

-Jokinen, Sutter, Megna, Neal, and Bennett. Those are the guys who appeared to play hard the entire game. The rest of them played 9 minutes.
-Fleury was down early on every goal against. Every goal against beat him high... Only the first one was solely his fault. He could have played the 3rd better. Can't be on your knees before the shot is released.
-PP and PK have been horrible lately. Needs fixed and needs fixed fast.
-I'm not sure how many hits the Pens were credited with. I can recall seeing two.
-Khudobin looked great. Like that guy.
-Engelland needs to be 4th line winger. Adams and Pyatt and Glass if possible scratched. I think Glass would do a bit better without Adams.
-Poor Megna. One shift he was out there trying to cycle with Adams, Glass, Scuderi, and Engelland. He worked his butt off, but what are you supposed to do with that?
-That has to be their last piss poor effort of the season. They should give the fans who paid to witness that their money back. Pathetic.

From Yesterdays Trib:

Bylsma suggested the composition of the team's third and fourth lines could be altered for different playoff series, pending the opponent. “Certain opponents, whether they're a big, strong, heavy team or we're playing a fast, speed team in the playoffs,” Bylsma said. “There's a difference between (5-foot-8) Brian Gibbons and (6-4) Taylor Pyatt in terms of those things. We've been looking at some of those combinations on the third and fourth lines over the last five games and over the next seven.”

Anyone want to guess how many times Glass and Adams get sat out while they look at those combinations? If it's greater than 0, I'll be shocked. At least one of them should sit out all of them.

Edited your post for brevity:

1. Agreed.
2. Agreed except about Glass. He needs to pound bodies in the playoffs.
3. Agree 100%. I'd rather see him on the 3rd line.

I don't see a scenario where sitting Glass improves the Pens.

so bylsma sees pyatt dressing in the playoffs. good to know we're in such capable hands.

he really is clueless about personnel.

Glass plays his role extremely well. Adams, on the other hand, has lost what little ability he had. Especially taking penalties in the two previous games and his failure to clear the puck on the PK multiple multiple multiple times this season. I see no reason that Adams is even dressing over any AHLer at this point. He's a black hole when it comes to offense, and he's been a liability too many times. I know it's beating the horse, but I wanted to yet again beat the mofo.

Don't you guys get tired of saying the same thing 82+ times a year? I know I get tired of it. Go back
And read how many posts are about Adams, Engo, despres Pyatt.... Oh yea, and Byslma. They all say the same thing every time. How can everyone see this but the coach?

I am going to be positive, although this team gives you plenty of reasons not to be.

[*] Losing Malkin is like losing more than one player. Jokinen and Neal struggle without him. With Malkin, that line is greater than the sum of its parts.
[*] The team struggled moving the puck up ice. Byslma's system, for better or worse, thrives on moving the puck from the defensemen. Martin and Letang are essential.
[*] That said, I think we need more puck support on our breakout. The forwards are getting too far away from defensemen.
[*] Adams sucks. I really want to see Gibbons and Megna on the ice when we're healthy.

Did Harrison go high with the elbow on Crosby before that outburt? If so, I can accept Sid's response. If not, then Sid just looks like the sissy that his detractors refer to him as. I don't want him to drop the gloves. But he looks a bit silly with that response if unproved.
