4/9/14 Red Wings v. Penguins- Official Game Thread

Postby Rocco on Wed Apr 09, 2014 6:27 pm

Preamble

Good evening everyone. The season is almost over. I've enjoyed the spleen-venting after every loss, haven't you? It's rare to have a 50-win season as disparaged as this one. The Pens have three games to go and have very little to play for. They're locked in to the #2 seed. Sid has the Art Ross locked up unless things revert back to 1980s hockey for Ryan Getzlaf and only Ryan Getzlaf. The main objective is to not lose any more important players between now and the start of the playoffs. Kris Letang returns after a layoff from a stroke. The Pens have been at their best over the last 3 seasons with Letang and Martin on defense and they finally have the two back. Letang should help the PP and the transition offense, and one would expect him to be eased back into the lineup. (Watch him go out and play 27 minutes tonight just to prove me wrong.) Now the Pens just need to get a faith healer to lay hands on Geno.

Tonight's opponent is the Detroit Red Wings. After crying their way out of the Western Conference they've endured a rash of injuries of their own this season. The team that dominated during the late 90s and 2000s has gotten old. Despite a negative goal differential, they look to be in solid shape barring a total meltdown to make the postseason and grab a wild card spot- this could very well be a preview of the first round.

Standings? Standings: http://espn.go.com/nhl/standings/_/group/2

It would be nice if the Flyers and Rangers beat the snot out of each other in the first round. Sadly it looks like the Capitals will miss the playoffs, which is a bad omen for the Pens since their three previous Cup wins all had the Pens drop-kicking Washington at some point in the postseason. Detroit or Columbus will make a nice substitute.

Anyway, I'd like to think there will be no major over-reactions tonight no matter what the outcome since the Pens don't have much to play for and Detroit's a point away from locking down a spot. I know far better, so let's just kick butt and not worry about anything.

hehe, Letang couldn't win because he wasn't coming back. Now Peverley is going to win over Letang and he isn't skating either. *snicker*

I never said the first part, so I don't know where that's coming from. I just don't see Letang winning it over a guy who almost died on the bench *shrug*

Yeah, that was directed at the LGP'osphere, not you directly. I don't remember who said it.

When the detroit announcer calls a goal - his voice cracks like he's just turned 15.
It annoys the ever living **** out of me.

I'd see Peverley winning next year? As in, when he comes back (or tries) to hockey.

He's not playing, so it doesn't really make a huge difference...

It's like Tampa Bay's announcer....he SCREAMS GOOOOAAALLL...like they just won game 7 for every goal! Sort of like how Ovie celebrates every goal against us
