Desiato wrote:I think that when Scuderi plays well, it's really hard to notice. That's because he has no flash at all: not fast, doesn't handle the puck smoothly, is not a big hitter. He has always been a difficult player to appreciate, despite always adding value. When he is noticed, it's usually due to lost battle or error. Even at his best -- which is probably not now.

He does a lot of little things well. Most of all, he's intelligent and super cool under pressure. As we go deeper into the playoffs, some guys will become less effective as the pressure builds up. They will be more restrained by obstruction. They will get emotional and frustrated. Not Rob Scuderi.

That's all I'm going to say.

Edit: He's sort of the anti-Letang. Maybe that's why he was brought back. The best part about what makes Scuderi valuable is that others can emulate those traits.

Noticeably missing from this: the affirmative statement that "Scuderi is good at hockey at present."

That post also implies that we've all never appreciated scuderi, which is false. Most people were pumped when he was re-signed. But suddenly we've all turned on him due to our ignorance of the nuances of defense.

Or, he's just trying to defend Scuderi and give him credit for playing decently (I personally think him & Maatta have been the weakest of the defensemen, but meh).

It doesn't have to be a "He's a savior" (i.e. Gibbons) or "He's absolute garbage" (i.e. Scuderi) sorta thing with every single post... and most posts aren't meant as attacks on hockey knowledge.

Ah well. Let the :scared: continue.

Everyone from Mirtle to Milbury to my mum (who, like Milbury, doesn't really know what she's watching--luv ya, mum!) is saying this series is over on Friday.

It had damn well better be. It would be just like our guys... just the mere thought annoys me.

LET'S GO, PENS! Please don't waste this opportunity. END THIS FRIDAY NIGHT!

I second that, Dish. Let’s wrap this up Friday and get set physically and mentally for the next battle--and a battle it will be. I want one series where I’m not sitting on the edge of my seat, breathing into a paper bag. That will come soon enough.

I'm not huge on this year's Scud, but Adams is the same exact thing (especially in the playoffs). His PK has been beyond extremely good but he's only noticed when he makes a turnover.

Sad news so close to Mother's Day.

Mother of Martin St. Louis has died suddenly on Thursday. Don't know if he will play tonight but my condolences to MSL and his family.

That's too young. Another example of how fans have no idea about the behind the scene things that affect a hockey players mentality on the ice.

It probably explains his poor play. If he somehow plays, as a human being I will be cheering for him. This could also pump up the Rangers, definitely a storyline to keep top of mind.

Back before even I was born, the standard in college football was Notre Dame, who in one year was "Undefeated, untied and unscored upon." I don't think people on this board will be satisfied until that is true of the Pens.
Right now, the Pens are 7-3 in their last 10 games. That says something about how well ALL the Penguins are playing. Yeah, maybe you can make a case to swap 41 for 4, or 6 for 27, or whatever, but right now HCDB/ACJM are pulling the right strings, and putting players out there who are winning. Sure, I'd like to see 19 playing on the top line with 87 and 71, but 19 is working really well with 22 and 57, so why change things?

Saw this last night. It really sucks for St. Louis. What horrible news to get at a time like this. I feel really bad for him.

I've been as disgusted with Scuderi's play as anyone else, but I have to think he's not fully recovered from his injury earlier in the season. I'm not trying to make excuses for the guy, but he was playing very well before the injury and like crud since coming back.

Maybe he'll be back to form next season after having rest?

He really was and everyone on the board and media was lauding him for his play.

EDIT: This is why I've kind of laid off the Scuderi trashing. I think next season we'll see a different player and everyone will forget why they were bashing him.

Perhaps he'll be like Gonchar, Martin, & other pickups as well and play much better after a year (or so) in the system.

I think it's really just a matter of health. He knows the system here and was playing very well before his injury.

The team's play the last three games (and hopefully tonight) certainly doesn't look like a team that has tuned out a coach or whatever. If the team defense continues and MAF holds up, you have to like the Pens has a Cup favorite.

I wish I were sure of the Pens' killer instinct, Icemeat. Here's hoping I'm pleasantly surprised! They've surprised the heck out of me so far this series!

Bylsma seemed more at ease, than he normally does in his pressers.
(That's a relative assessment, of course.)

I have no idea what to make of that.

To me, he sounded like he was on the verge of tears. He knows his run with this team is over, but I'm sure he'll land on his feet. If he was looking to reprise his role as Good Cop, I think Vancouver would be a decent landing spot.
