"Official" Replacing Bylsma Thread

Postby Crankshaft on Mon May 12, 2014 12:29 pm

Please humor me as I am curious as to what coaches are available (or going to be available) after this season, should the Penguins decide to part ways with Dan Bylsma.

Obviously, the big name out there is Barry Trotz. Another name brought up was Guy Boucher, who is coaching in Switzerland.

Who else is out there?

Torts (LOL!)

If they are going to fire DB, they are bringing in Trotz.

meow, thanks for a serious answer. I have not heard Blashill's name.

After a quick google search, I'm encouraged that he's known for helping develop Detroit's top prospects.

Boucher is an idiot with that 1-3-1. Scratch him.

Trotz is the name everyone will look at. One has to wonder if the reason he hasn't taken another job yet is he's waiting to see what happens with the Pens. Obviously, he and Shero have a background.

Here's a story by Kevin Allen that has some names.

John Stevens. The Pens need to toughen up. Hiring an ex Flyer coach might be a step in the right direction.

Jeff Blashill, Willie Desjardins. Nope, no rookies. This team would chew them up and spit them out. ...'like teaching table manners to a shark." (look it up if you don't know where it came from)

John Hynes. Nope, has to be somebody from outside the organization. No more inbreeding.

Kirk Muller. Not impressed with what he did in Carolina.

Ron Wilson. A possibility. Toronto was better under him than they've been under Carlyle. But his shelf life might have expired.

Here's another article.
John Tortorella.. Now wouldn't this be fun! These pampered whiney stars would get quite the wakeup call. But Mario would never approve, so, no.

Todd Nelson. See Blashill and Desjardins above.

Kevin Dineen. He's a possibility. The players would respect him. But he might go to Carolina.

Mike Keenan. Please, please, please please. If there's a hockey god out there, I beg you to make this happen. That would be even more fun than Torts.

Now, had Shero followed my advice and done this last year, he could have had Lindy Ruff or Alain Vigneault. But, noooooooooooo, had to give his good buddy Dan one more chance.

So we can have another guy teach the same system that gets routinely broken during the play-offs?

Man, that is shortsighted on your part. He would have his own tweaks to the system AND is more of a disciplinarian that HCDB.

Has to be an experienced, respected coach not currently employed as a HC in the NHL that can teach sound team hockey that the vets won't tune out.

Is Scotty Bowman available? Can we clone him or something?

John Stevens? LOL. Every country club needs delicious cake and romantic tales of players as ingredients. I'm not LOLing at you, MCM--not at all. It's that I saw the guy up close for the entire time he was with the Phantoms and the Flyers. Maybe he's grown as AC for the LAK.

Does anyone know anything about Dave King? I've heard his name a good bit, but I know very little about him.

I hope winning Tuesday can table this conversation for another week.

He's gone the coaching path that I like most: college or junior head, NHL assistant, then AHL head. We haven't seen his development of GR players quite yet because this was his first year as the head coach there. Being in the Detroit organization is always a plus. They don't hire schlubs.

I don't want him. He's a ruiner of hockey whose Ottawa teams always underachieved in the playoffs.

Here's one for ya. How about Randy Cunneyworth. He flamed out in Montreal for outside reasons, but he is highly thought of and has ties to Mario.

No doubt in my mind that if Bylsma is fired he goes to Washington. They would love him there. OV would do well under his style.
