Madden Tries To Explain Sid's Woes

Postby Mad City Mike on Tue May 13, 2014 11:37 am

Mark madden has a good column today speculating on the cause of Sid's woes. I especially like these:

-- He's weary of not having quality linemates. Evgeni Malkin is great, but the two-headed monster doesn’t work long-term. Chris Kunitz is a Crosby creation, and he’s struggling right now. Lee Stempniak? Brian Gibbons? Come on. Crosby is too often asked to elevate lesser talents. That can’t be done indefinitely.
-- He knows the Penguins aren’t good enough. This is the one to bet on. Crosby sees this window of opportunity slamming shut. One Stanley Cup isn’t adequate.

I think they are linked. The stats back this up. Prior to the deadline, Sid had 29G, 55A, +18 in 61 games. After the deadline, he had only 7G, 13A, +6 in 19 games. That's a huge dropoff. Did he see Shero acquire Stempniak and Goc and just say to himself, "WTF? There went Vanek to the Canadiens for a pittance. Moulson to Minnesota for even less. Gaborik to LA. Hemsky to Ottawa. Then you make a trade with Calgary and it's not even for Cammalleri. You got me Lee Friggin' Stempniak. Gee, thanks Ray."

Okay, he wouldn't say that over even consciously think it. But you do have to wonder what went through his mind and why his production declined after that, don't you?

Sid could be the poster boy for professionalism and leadership :fist:

Perhaps, he is playing crappy for our own good. Bylsma gone. Shero gone. We're saved!!

Thanks for the link. As for this part:

"He knows the Penguins aren’t good enough. This is the one to bet on. Crosby sees this window of opportunity slamming shut. One Stanley Cup isn’t adequate."

As lousy and inconsistent as they've looked this postseason, they are good enough to beat Montreal and anyone except Chicago from the West. And if they win tonight, they may very well face Montreal and then one of LA/Minnesota/Anaheim. They're of course capable of losing to anyone, too, but Sid may never forgive himself if the Pens fall tonight and then Boston gets knocked out tomorrow.

I don't feel sorry for Sid. Shero went out and got Iginla for Sid's line, but Sid didn't want him on his line. It was Sid, not DB, who made that decision. And that's probably why Iginla went out of his way to harass Sid earlier this year.

The key demarcation is not the trade deadline. It's Dupuis getting hurt.

Again, someone over-simplifying a problem. Pens lose big? ALL FLEURY. Pens lose in 3rd period? ALL BECAUSE BYLSMA CAN'T ADJUST. Sid not scoring? Must hate his line mates so he gave up.

Let's be fair, all of that is Blysma's fault with others thrown in depending on situation.

The numbers do not support this. I did before/after stats for three significant dates in the season

1. The Dupuis injury. Sid's PPG declined only 12 percent after the injury.
2. The Olympics. His PPG declined the same 12 percent following the Olympics.
3. The deadline. His PPG declined 19 percent after the deadline.

Recall that he also had that horrific -5 performance against San Jose the first game after the deadline. I will grant that there could be more factors like strength of schedule affecting the numbers, but I simply don't have the time to dig that far into it.

Probably because they continue to get a reaction from the drama queen fans.

Outside of Fat Ben's foibles, you don't see this with Steelers coverage.

You're right, Madden did try to explain Sid's woes. Tried.

The over-analysis of Sid and the Penguins in general is getting really old.

You know that things are going badly for the Pens when MCM becomes a more regular poster.

Dupes had seven goals and 20 points in 39 games. Let's not live in fantasy land where he was tearing it up.

The makeup of the line changed and the production of Kunitz and Crosby declined after Dupuis got hurt. It's not that Dupuis was a juggernaut, but no one put in his place came close to what he did.

As rel touched on, it's not the scoring, but the play away from the puck for Dupuis. Also there's no guarantee Dupuis wouldn't have started scoring more. He had 7 points in the last 10 games he played (4G-3A)
