Maybe I'm being over-dramatic (and I don't even think it applies THIS year, the Pens worst year in recent history on paper), but in general... People always ask how much credit do coaches of amazing teams deserve / what value do they even have?
I'm starting to feel like DB answers that. Everyone gives him credit for regular season stats... What average NHL coach wouldn't have success with the usual roster of the pens post-cup?
I feel like Pens had the shot of a dynasty.. I mean look at all the talent. Just getting bitter / feeling like so many years of Sid / Geno's prime were wasted
I'll probably later regret this unnecessary / piling on post

I wouldn't come close to calling this year "the worst year in recent memory". They won their division and made it to the second round of the playoffs. They should have gone further, and definitely under achieved, but there have been recent years where they didn't do either of those things.
Don't get me wrong, this is still a decidedly disappointing year, but we've definitely seen darker days. Depending on your definition of "recent", MUCH darker days.

Adding "on paper" makes it even a weirder thing to say.

The term "on paper" applies to this team in more ways than OP listed.
