Hit, Trap, Bang, Score

Postby RxBandit66 on Wed May 14, 2014 12:04 pm

This four point philosophy is how championships are won in the current NHL. The league will not change.

Forget stick on puck. Forget the midgets. Forget the ancient slow moving players. Forget mustache boy. The Pens need to re-style themselves as a slick, fast team that hits hard, traps, and instantly converts defensive turnovers into offense, as opposed to falling victim to opponents who do. They need to crash the net, and do a better job protecting theirs.

To do this, it would behoove them to add youth, size, grit, and skill up front. They should be willing to part with anyone not named Crosby or Malkin to accomplish that.

But, but, but...

I thought Shero and Bylsma were smarter than the rest of the NHL and had figured out how to win in the new NHL. Their system would be the new rage and everyone would copy it. Geniuses, they were.

Regardless of the talent level of your team, the idea that you can impose your will on every opponent and make them play your style is pure arrogance.

The sad part about the Bylsma/Shero failure is that in the playoffs it didn't even work against inferior teams.

Yea, the Blackhawks who are the defending champions and have won two Cups in 4 years and are a pretty good bet to be headed to another, Hit/Trap/Bang all the time, to the tune of being dead last in hits the past two seasons.

Acquire talented hockey players who have the puck as much as possible, and preferably more than the other team. There is no one "right way" to build a team IMO (eg, the Kings routinely lead or are near the top in hits), but this result doesn't mean Bylsma's system can't be successful elsewhere or with different players (it would also help if he was more flexible and willing to sit veterans who aren't performing, but whatever). His time has come to an end here, but concluding that this means "Hit, Trap, Bang" is the only way to win in the NHL ignores what some of the best teams in the league are doing.

The Pens looked good in these playoffs when they were trapping. The rest of the time it was a disorganized mess. Personally I'd prefer games 2, 3, and 4 of the Rangers series to games 5 and 6.

If hockey got a little more boring and they won the Cup, I'd be all for that.

Facts are inconvenient and don't lend themselves to catchy post subjects.

We actually agree about nearly everything in terms of actual sports as far as I can tell. We also agree that the other person is a horrible human being.

Every now and then Slappy's fever breaks and he has a cogent point. We both agree in general that NAN is insane and Shafnutz should be fired into the sun, though Slappy has to be careful saying that since it would be bad for him to badmouth his fellow Cliquemates.
