Madden says Babcock

Postby headh on Thu May 15, 2014 7:40 am

@MarkMaddenX: I hear Bylsma's out, Shero stays. I also hear Babcock's a real possibility. More tomorrow. Mario& Mr Burkle will fix this. They have to.

Maybe after 9 years with Detroit and 5 straight disappointing playoffs (!), Babcock and/or the Wings feel a fresh start is needed. But I don't see it happening either.

Well, it's a good point. His last cup win was a year before Bylsma's with last finals appearance the year after. Every year since then he has taken a team that's been one of the preseason favorites into the playoffs and not been back to the conference finals, including 2 losses to San Jose and one to Nashville.

He's won gold medals, which is great if we're trying to win gold medals with Canadian all star teams.

The more I think about it, the less thrilled I am.

Something tells me this thread is going to build up some steam. Doubt the hire happens but I expect steam.

I asked someone about that last year... has a coach ever been traded for a coach, and is it even possible to do that? I did not get an answer.

The Browns were going to try trading players for Jim Harbaugh's contract. Not really the same thing but equally bizarre.

I haven't met a hockey fan outside of Pittsburgh that has any respect for DB. Most consider him to be a clown unable to do anything with a bunch of all-stars. No way Detroit would be interested. It would take a team wanting PR with an uneducated hockey fanbase. I could see the Panthers taking Dan in a heartbeat.

I see one of Tocchet, Cunneyworth, or Trotz as the next Pens coach before I see Babcock or Keenan.

Didn't he win a poll or two where players were asked which coach they'd like to play for? not that it really means anything.

Babcock and the Red Wings are discussing now whether or not they see him as their coach next season or not. Probably going to go one of two ways: Extension or a mutual walk-away from the final year of his contract. The Red Wings won't fire him I don't think, too much respect between Ken Holland and Mike Babcock. But he's not a lock to remain there. I think he will, personally. But it's up in the air, as I understand it.

Babcock was forced to use some kids (which he is prone to not do, as we've seen when he plays Dan Cleary and Todd Bertuzzi on the top line instead of the talented young kids) this year and there's going to be pressure for him to give those kids the spots they earned next year...we'll see how willing he is. We'll see if the Red Wings feel a new voice is necessary as they have an influx of quality young talent coming up...

If Babcock becomes available, I could see us firing Bylsma and pulling the trigger for sure...

Chuck Tanner was traded to the Pirates from the A's for Manny Sanguillén.

That's what I was thinking as well...Unless they both mutually agree to end the relationship. He is still under contract for another year. Stranger things have happened...

Things change but Babcock seemed adamant about not leaving Michigan for a year:

I want a coach who plays the young guys. There is one problem. We aren't exactly full of young guys thanks to Shero's mess. I could see Babcock being brought in until we get through these horrible contracts over the next 3 years.
