He's better suited to sell Italian ice in the stands.

I don't think Madden originated this. He dismissed it yesterday on the show. So either he is using it for talk fodder or there is some truth to it. It seems exceptionally unlikely that Detroit would let him go, but not impossible. Jim Leyland left the Pirates when it was clear their run was over. So if Coach Babcock wants to go, he will, but I'm not convinced in any way that he does want to go.

Probably going to go one of two ways: Extension or a mutual walk-away from the final year of his contract. The Red Wings won't fire him I don't think, too much respect between Ken Holland and Mike Babcock. But he's not a lock to remain there. I think he will, personally. But it's up in the air, as I understand it.

Babcock was forced to use some kids (which he is prone to not do, as we've seen when he plays Dan Cleary and Todd Bertuzzi on the top line instead of the talented young kids) this year and there's going to be pressure for him to give those kids the spots they earned next year...we'll see how willing he is. We'll see if the Red Wings feel a new voice is necessary as they have an influx of quality young talent coming up...

If Babcock becomes available, I could see us firing Bylsma and pulling the trigger for sure...

But, if what you say about him using vets over kids, will it really be that much of a change in Pittsburgh?

Obviously, DB can't hold his jock when it comes to systems and game management, but many fans are more ticked about Bennett not with Sid and Despres in the AHL.

I know he is saying "all the right things", but I don't get the feeling he is looking for a new challenge.

I asked someone about that last year... has a coach ever been traded for a coach, and is it even possible to do that? I did not get an answer.

There was the Tortarella / Vigneaut deal last year. Not really a trade, but....

I'd bring in a trained orangutan, who would be an upgrade over Bylsma.

What makes you think Trevor Linden hasn't watched the NHL playoffs for the past 5 seasons???

If DB gets a job quickly, it will be with a team that has been out of the playoffs for a while and would be thrilled just to get there.

Well, it's a good point. His last cup win was a year before Bylsma's with last finals appearance the year after. Every year since then he has taken a team that's been one of the preseason favorites into the playoffs and not been back to the conference finals, including 2 losses to San Jose and one to Nashville.

He's won gold medals, which is great if we're trying to win gold medals with Canadian all star teams.

The more I think about it, the less thrilled I am.

Detroit's gotten bounced by higher seeded teams every year since they lost to the Pens. They've gotten older and creakier. When Lidstrom retired their defense dropped off considerably, and this year they dealt with injuries to Datsyuk/Zetterberg. I'm pretty sure they've been at or near their ceiling the last few years.

If a caller suggested this, Madden would berate them with questions about how exactly Detroit is going to let Babcock go, then call the caller and idiot and tell them to never call again.

If you hate Craig Adams playing over younger/faster players because Bylsma overvalues slow vets... you'll hate it even more when Babcock does it.
