Speculation: Ryan Miller?

Postby DesertPenguin on Mon May 19, 2014 1:09 pm

No basis to any rumor, just want to discuss the possability. I'd also like to go on record saying I'm OK with Fleury moving forward.

Given that, I certainly believe Miller is a superior goaltender to Fleury. Especially considering the management/coaching upheaval going on right now, it wouldn't be a stretch to see them go for a new goaltender.

The big reason Miller interests me is I'm not sure how many teams both A) Have a need and B) He would want to play for. Miller didn't want to be part of a Buffalo rebuild, so you have to figure any bottom dwellers are off his list. Trick is, most contenders have a very established goaltender situation. It's hard to win without one.

Atlantic Division
Boston - Rask, all set
Buffalo - Just left
Detroit - Howard is solid
Florida - Just made move for Luongo
Montreal - Price
Ottawa - Possible. They certainly need goalie help.
Tampa - Very happy with Ben Bishop
Toronto - The Reimer/Bernier experiment is still too young to change course

Metropolitan
Carolina - Khudobin was solid, and have one more goalie than they presently need with Ward, Peters
Columbus - Vezina Trophy winner
New Jersey - Hitched their trailer to Schneider
New York (Islanders) - Possability, but never a popular free agent destination. Also dealt for rights to Halak
New York (Rangers) - Lundy
Philadelphia - Happy with Mason, but who knows with them?
Pittsburgh - Fleury's play improved, but body of work in playoffs since Cup win less than impressive.
Washington - Legitimate possability, still trying to nail down goaltender position

Central
Chicago - Crawford playing at playoff MVP level
Colorado - Varlamov doing very well
Dallas - Possible, but Lehtonen 4 more years and has NTC
Minnesota - Very possible. Harding was great until medical problems shut him down. Team is on the rise, and consistent goaltending would help.
Nashville - Rinne 5 years NTC
St. Louis - Just signed Elliot, moving on from Miller
Winnepeg - Desperately need a goalie, but can they attract Miller

Pacific
Anaheim - Gibson is the future. Could use Miller short term but not worth giving him a lengthy contract
Calgary - Dumpster fire, not a contender
Edmonton - Possible, but still not a contender
Los Angeles - Quick
Phoenix - Smith under contract for 5 more seasons, NTC
San Jose - Makes some sense. One more year of Niemi, and that team needs something to get them over the hump
Vancouver - Possible, but the Canucks seem to be fading from contender status

Ottawa, NYI, Pittsburgh, Washington, Minnesota, Winnepeg, San Jose

If Miller wants to win, I'd put us in the top three destinations for him with Minnesota and San Jose. Signing Miller to term could then allow us to deal Fleury for an asset.

Thoughts?

Robin Lehner is Ottawa's goalie of the present and future, extremely unlikely that they would entertain the thought of that,,,

Miller wants to live out West because of his wife/gf or whatever...he'd love to play for Anaheim and help fellow American goalie John Gibson get acclimated I bet...

If we hate Fleury I can't imagine what this fan base would do to Miller.

Nope. He will be more expensive than Fleury, he's close to being washed up, and he didn't play well for STL in the playoffs.s

He did not look great in the playoffs this year. Also, he is sort of the anti-MAF in that he seems to always be down in the dumps. Where you always seen MAF smiling the next day, you see Miller looking like he just lost his dog. He also has been known to call out his teammates. In all the years of MAF, i do not think he has done that once.

He had one bad playoffs where his entire team played poorly. They were in a tailspin at the end of the regular season and it continued into the playoffs. Given how well he played in Buffalo this season, on an awful team, I highly doubt he is washed up.

I've heard the Anaheim rumors, but is he really ready to transition to a backup/mentor role with Gibson? Also, does Anaheim really want to spend that money given that Gibson seems to be ready now, not to mention their other capable goaltenders?

Need more toothpick goalies who don't fill the net.

We're stuck with fleury until we groom someone better. I'm reluctantly fine with that.

Miller is overrated. I'd only sign him for Fleury's money. Otherwise, no.

I want Hiller instead.

I'd take him for the right price, but something tells me the Pens are not going to be an attractive UFA situation with all of the upheaval going on right now.

If Fleury is traded, we need a CHEAPER goalie....not a more expensive one.

But... Fleury's not that expensive...?

He's the 14th-highest paid goalie in the league. Quality goalies don't come cheap.

Wow looking at that list. $5MM for MAF isnt' bad at all...Hank at $11MM. I know that's not his cap hit, but wow...

Just for FYI, this is the cap hit list. Fleury is still 14th. Fleury has a great contract with us.

Fluery. Grass is always greener, I'm sure another fan base who hates their goalie would love to swap with us.

fleury is an average starting goalie, but he's paid like an average goalie. re-signing him is a good opportunity to get fair market value on a free agent goalie. i'd take him back at 5 mill a year.

I think if they move on from Fleury it will be for the sake of change, not because of anything related to his contract.

I think he is an average goalie and he gets paid like one. His next contract, he may be looking for a salary bump...then all of a sudden he might not be getting paid like an average goalie anymore.

He was solid this season but if the front office wanted change simply for the sake of change, I would have no problem with it.

why all the hate for Hiller? Hiller is a million $ cheaper (if you take his current contract) and has better career stats both in the regular season and playoffs than Fleury.

Plus you don't get the blooper reel goals you get with Fleury.
