No basis to any rumor, just want to discuss the possability. I'd also like to go on record saying I'm OK with Fleury moving forward.
Given that, I certainly believe Miller is a superior goaltender to Fleury. Especially considering the management/coaching upheaval going on right now, it wouldn't be a stretch to see them go for a new goaltender.
The big reason Miller interests me is I'm not sure how many teams both A) Have a need and B) He would want to play for. Miller didn't want to be part of a Buffalo rebuild, so you have to figure any bottom dwellers are off his list. Trick is, most contenders have a very established goaltender situation. It's hard to win without one.
Boston - Rask, all set
Buffalo - Just left
Detroit - Howard is solid
Florida - Just made move for Luongo
Montreal - Price
Ottawa - Possible. They certainly need goalie help.
Tampa - Very happy with Ben Bishop
Toronto - The Reimer/Bernier experiment is still too young to change course
Carolina - Khudobin was solid, and have one more goalie than they presently need with Ward, Peters
Columbus - Vezina Trophy winner
New Jersey - Hitched their trailer to Schneider
New York (Islanders) - Possability, but never a popular free agent destination. Also dealt for rights to Halak
New York (Rangers) - Lundy
Philadelphia - Happy with Mason, but who knows with them?
Pittsburgh - Fleury's play improved, but body of work in playoffs since Cup win less than impressive.
Washington - Legitimate possability, still trying to nail down goaltender position
Chicago - Crawford playing at playoff MVP level
Colorado - Varlamov doing very well
Dallas - Possible, but Lehtonen 4 more years and has NTC
Minnesota - Very possible. Harding was great until medical problems shut him down. Team is on the rise, and consistent goaltending would help.
Nashville - Rinne 5 years NTC
St. Louis - Just signed Elliot, moving on from Miller
Winnepeg - Desperately need a goalie, but can they attract Miller
Anaheim - Gibson is the future. Could use Miller short term but not worth giving him a lengthy contract
Calgary - Dumpster fire, not a contender
Edmonton - Possible, but still not a contender
Los Angeles - Quick
Phoenix - Smith under contract for 5 more seasons, NTC
San Jose - Makes some sense. One more year of Niemi, and that team needs something to get them over the hump
Vancouver - Possible, but the Canucks seem to be fading from contender status
Ottawa, NYI, Pittsburgh, Washington, Minnesota, Winnepeg, San Jose
If Miller wants to win, I'd put us in the top three destinations for him with Minnesota and San Jose. Signing Miller to term could then allow us to deal Fleury for an asset.
