He'll still be ready by the first month of the season and this will give one of the prospects a chance to get some real playing time. The Penguins need a little room to really see how these guys are doing. Even with Pouliot in the same position, there's still Harrington, Dumoulin and Samuelsson looking to crack the lineup.
This. Pouliot and Maatta on the shelf isn't great, but it gives Despres, Sammy, Harrington, Dumoulin a chance to come up and play. If one of them plays so well that you can't justify sending them down, then great, we have a trade asset. Think Goligoski and Whitney. In both instances, injuries elevated players, gave us a good idea of what we had, and when everyone was healthy we were able to make a move from a position of strength to fill a need.
