What? My brain just exploded. If he's out 4-6 months like Pouliot this isn't good. And I'll have to eat my words about Scuderi being useful too. Very bad.

Bob Mckenzie tweeted this as well. Said he was told Maatta could be out 4 months. Or more, depending what the surgery uncovers.

This stinks.

****. That would explain some of his decline in play.

All of you people were ready to crucify the kid by the end of the playoffs and here he is, playing through a shoulder injury and still playing better Scuds, Borts, Orpik, and Letang.

Hell, I was happy with his play without the injury. Get well soon, Olli!

He's got a bright future. The Pens will be fine on D, with Harrington, Despres, and Dumoulin ready to go and Martin, Letang, Scuderi, and Bortuzzo under contract. So long as the injury and recovery doesn't stunt his progress, this shouldn't be a huge deal. On the other hand, if it does stunt his progress, it's a huge deal.

He didn't play well, he was constantly targeted and was a weak link. Injury meant he should have sat (thanks Obylsma), not that his play was magically made better.

Since it's been mentioned...

WB/S Pens now to the conference finals. Beat Providence last night in game 7.

They were up 5-0 with .50 odd seconds in the 2nd period, and almost choked the game away. They didn't make it easy on themselves.

This news may seem bad, but there's always an upside. He'll still be ready by the first month of the season and this will give one of the prospects a chance to get some real playing time. The Penguins need a little room to really see how these guys are doing. Even with Pouliot in the same position, there's still Harrington, Dumoulin and Samuelsson looking to crack the lineup.

If Samuelsson continues on the track he's been on for the last 14-18 months...he'll probably end up on the opening day roster regardless.

Then they're still playing Bylsma's system perfectly.

He recently returned to the Baby Pens lineup after suffering an "undisclosed injury" in the playoffs. He's been playing fantastic. At least from what I hear on the broadcast.

This. Pouliot and Maatta on the shelf isn't great, but it gives Despres, Sammy, Harrington, Dumoulin a chance to come up and play. If one of them plays so well that you can't justify sending them down, then great, we have a trade asset. Think Goligoski and Whitney. In both instances, injuries elevated players, gave us a good idea of what we had, and when everyone was healthy we were able to make a move from a position of strength to fill a need.

At least we have depth. I'm sure Olli will rehab dilligently, stay in shape, and be good to go by mid season.
