New Head Coach: Mike Johnston.

Postby pekkasteele on Mon Jun 23, 2014 10:37 am

We have so many different topics about this so why not another one, it might be easier to have one for each of the candidates.

So Mike Johnston, have been assistant in Vancouver and LA, now HC for the Winterhawks.

I first reaction was, "Who?" and, well, still is. He doesn't seem like an experienced coach.

That suspension is a joke. Especially the length.

So if we are digging this deep, when do the Pens give Mikey a call for an interview? :)

Might as well put this here, too.

npv708 wrote:Ok, so to try and get out ahead of so much of the misleading info on twitter:

- Mike Johnston is a WHL Coach for the Winterhawks, but has been an asst and associate coach with the Canucks and an asst coach with the Kings.
- There is precedent for a CHL-level coach making the jump (see Roy, Patrick)
- He was banned for a year by the WHL, here's why:
The WHL slammed Portland for 54 player-benefit violations involving 14 players over a five-year period, which sounds ominous until it's broken down -- air travel for seven in-need families, three incidents of offseason training for players and three seasons where the team provided cell phones for its captains.
Given the scope of what Portland did, knowingly or unknowingly, the sanctions seemed harsh.
Some argued the Hawks got exactly what they deserved. Others said it was like administering lethal injection for jaywalking.

- He interviewed for the Canucks job in June.

If he was touching kids I'd have a problem with him. Violating what I think or silly rules that are in place to ensure that the CHL stays an amateur league on a level playing field like the NCAA is supposed to be doesn't really bother me at all.

Ah, but the fact that he cheated doesn't seem to be in dispute. Sorry, that's not the kind of guy I want behind my bench.

As far as I know, Gardiner MacDougall (below) still hasn't signed an extension with the University of New Brunswick. He's generally regarded as the top university coach in Canada, has dealt with a lot of former pros (mostly AHL/ECHL) who have gone back to school, and has an awesome moustache.

That said, he's turned down several QMJHL coaching offers over the past few years because he likes the gig he's got at UNB.

I would never let this team disappoint any of you again. Wouldn't win every Cup maybe, but we would not cry ourselves to sleep for days after the season is over...

Is Jacques Martin still drawing a paycheck? Just give it to him already. Experienced, can't do any worse, and easily bootable if the Babcock crowd is actually onto something. There, I solved it.

U.S. or Franco's Italian?

j/k! Of course I'm not minimizing the real importance of your service; thank you! This coaching search is just getting to me.

You sir, will do just fine.
We must insist however, that you keep the fun and games to an absolute minimum.

How about instead of mustache boy, we do a little PS4 before and after practice with an emphasis on NHL game? Kinda like killing 2 birds with one stone.
