Looks good from the couple vids I have seen of him - Led the nationals in scoring a couple months ago - 6 games he had 14 goals and 7 assists... yeah not bad.

That video looks like my summer Men's League. Not saying he's a bad pick, but the move was against a bunch of bums.

I just read the Pens write-up if him. Grew up under 2 hours away from Pittsburgh, claims he's a Pens fan. Models his game after Brandon Sutter.

So to recap, the Pens pick a European forward with their first pick, the exact opposite of nearly every draft since 2006.

Some complaints about not picking Saad, a local kid, so they pick a local kid for this draft.

Interesting...

Don't get it twisted. Local love.or not, the constituency saw talent in Saad. When the regime was calling for d, the ones outside of the organization saw offense. This isn't the first go around. The talent of guys like Moeller, who didn't pan out yet, should've usurped organizational mandate.

4th rounders normally don't see the NHL, and if they do it's not for a long time. The Pens really needed to nail their first pick and they did. Not having a 2nd or 3rd round pick really handcuffed them. Rounds 4-7 are a hope and a prayer.. so if the kid works out great, if he doesn't he's like 80% of other 4th round picks that don't pan out.

I have seen him play several times. The best way I could describe him is he is a slippery player. The other team knows he is there yet he just flies under the radar at times and scores. He is accounted for yet the other team manages to lose track of him. The other thing I can say is he has a tremendous amount of hockey knowledge.
We shall see

I don't think #21 will be found on mikey's prospects list any time soon.

I'm from the area just 9 years older. He has always been the best player locally, I haven't followed him much in Deerfield being that its in Mass. But he is a solid skater, and has usually been more offensively focused. The one thing that picks at me is in the write up it said he was ranked #184 in north american skaters and the pens used the 113th pick. I see a little bit of a PR move in this, they could have easily taken in him a later round. He is going to play a year in the USHL and then off the Brown. I would agree with some other posters doubt he sees the NHL, but I'm pulling for him anyways. He's at least 4 years away from turning pro maybe even 5, he'll be 23-24 then so a lot could change.

Why make the draft so deep if over half of them aren't even expected to play? Seems like a lot of administrative overhead that could be done away with if the draft was only 4 rounds. Maybe let the teams scramble for the undrafted people the next day if they need more talent.

Then again, Hornqvist was drafted dead last so what do I know.

I like that we are already writing off the kids ability to play in the NHL. That's rich.

Armchair experts. Everyone here can evaluate a player's whole career just by some YouTube clips of them under the age of 18.

People are referencing a video from Youth Teir II. A league Lafferty wasn't even supposed to be in. He scored 25 points in 7 games in that tournament, and held the brakes on from completely embarrassing every kid on the ice. His dad coached the team, and he showed up to play. His talent level is about 5x of what that video shows. There's no reason for him to be there other than to get time in a quick seasonal tournament to keep his legs fresh.

Deerfield, the prep team he played on, runs a gauntlet of good teams every year. He's good enough to be first round USHL caliber. The kid has all the tools to actually develop into a fairly solid bottom six guy in the future. Whether or not he makes it depends on quite a bit, but writing him off that easily is just plain silly.

Jesse you got it. His step-dad coached him since he was 7/8 and I feel it was more of a nod to the community that developed him that he participated on the team that went to nationals. He got to play with a lot of old friends from when he was younger so I'm sure it felt nice that he could share some success with them as well. I did say he probably wont make the NHL but I feel that is more of the odds, but he defiantly can just depends on how focused he stays in the coming years.

Do you know the story about what happened with Salmon Arm and why he didn't go there?

Jesse I'll ask around I haven't been around the rink the past 5-6 months since the arrival of my daughter, but I'll be playing the in beer league this fall, so I may have more info in a few months, most of it will be through the local grape vine, maybe I can get some stuff out of his brother or step dad when I get back in the loop at the rink.
